    Car/Toy Purchase help/Advice please.

I have been lurking around on here for a wee while now, I have a notion for an S/RS2 but as you will know they are not that easy to pick up.
I am in no particular rush so I am depending on; when I see the right thing I will know. Been educating myself while I go reading various build threads, wow, I thought i could do most things but some of you guys are amasing, I can only dream. I thought it might be worth starting this thread to get peoples opinions/advice and try to clarify in my own head what exactly the "right thing" is.
Here's where I am at the moment. I like "modified" so I don't think I would survive a concours RS3 for example or even a coupe quattro, too much money involved (for me) and I like to tinker and change things to make cars individual. That brings up the subject of budget, yes there is one but not sure what it is at present but I don't see me paying £10k for say a pristine tuned S2 either, so some kind of project would be good, not so much a restoration though, rust, Yuk, I would prefer something like a track car with a blown engine or similar. In a low fed up, this is not going anywhere moment I toyed with the idea of building something from a separate chassis (non-Audi likely) but I don't really know enough about this, where would you source one, what is the right kind to get, (Kits, they don't seem to have improved in the 20+ years I haven't looked at them) so shelved this idea but I do like the kind of semi-space frame converted Audis I have seen, would prefer if someone had done all or some of that work though before it comes to me, can do some metal work but not to the degree or standard I have seen on here, I am not against learning new things but whether I want to practice it on my project and risks it not turning out as it should I don't know. There is also the question of engine, I love the 5 pot sound and the performance for the age of car is amasing but I could do with knowing more about some of the other Audi engines e.g. could a V6/V8 be a viable and easier to source alternative. The body of the car incidentally needs to be practical and capable of being an everyday car (maybe not most peoples idea but so long as it's mine), for this reason I wouldn't rule out say an Audi coupe but an avant would probably be better. I looked at an S6 avant (5 pot) a while back, very tempted and an under rated car by many and a potential classic for the future that is relatively cheap just now. I think though a bit big and from a performance point of view that's always going to limit you a bit, I know Audi has promoted big cars that go fast regardless but you can't really beat smaller and lighter where performance is involved.
Anyway going to stop babbling and see what others think/suggest, could be an interesting topic or maybe you will just send the guys with the straight-jackets for me

Non of these cars are particularly light, hence the power crazed fest we see on here and love so much. I knew I would regret selling my S2 Coupe even before I decided to but sometimes needs must.

In time, I will be looking at getting another car and progression means it must be faster than last. I have been deliberating modified 944 turbos, Noble M12's but always keep coming back to the idea of the wonderful I5 Turbo. It is just such a brilliant engine. Age means parts are the biggest annoyance though but bang for buck you do get.

There is much to be said for an S2 Avant, kept stock looking but massively played with engine and suspension and brakes. Probably the ultimate sleeper whilst being a fantastic everyday car and not too big. Ticks many boxes (eek, am I getting old)

Good luck with whatever you decide and like you are doing, taking your time and waiting for the right example that fits your outlook is a good idea.

If you want a practical car with a 5 banger, get an S4/S6. These are easier to find and cheaper than an S2 these days and great cars in their own right, in fact better in many ways. Unfinished projects do come up for sale, but rarely. Most of these cars a projects now anyway to be honest.

agree with this, more room inside, easier to source parts for

Cheers guys, some good advice there and no-one in a white coat is carting me off.
Macspring, That was my best attempt at paragraphs.
Bluequattro, I will have a look at that sounds interesting. Been doing some research and now know a bit more about engines and power outputs. There is an 80 on here with a V8 but I see now they didn't really come with them so a conversion would be required, guess the V6 is the best starting point.
Cottis, We have been looking at the same cars, I was on the Noble site the other night I know what you're saying about relatively Audis not being light, it's quality vs. weight and where you draw the line. I think when it's a bit older car though it's going to be lighter than the new stuff by default, so in my book that's a bonus. Ultimate sleeper vision is where I want to go
Error404/david1980, Have to admit to strong leanings towards the 5cylinder, nothing ruled out but just not sure I need that much space. I look at the new RS6s and they are an amasing bit of kit but compared in size to say, an old S6 even, they're enormous.

(New Para) Anyway I will keep looking and when a decision is reached you will be the first to know, cue new build thread.

Ok so I have mulled thngs over for a few days and I think it has to be Avant and five cylinder.
What Bluequattro offered me was extremely tempting but I really fon't see me doing a V8 conversion. I am thinking if I am looking for something modified then it doesn't need to be an S2 even, although S2 to RS2 spec is an obvious choice if I could get the right car. I know 5 cylinder engines are hard to get but I did wonder about adn engine project, then pick up a suitable shell to out it in, maybe even an S2, remove original engine and use re-built one. Could domeone explain to me about stroker engines, what's the benefit and what's the easiest to source? Is there anyone reconditions/upgrades 5 Cylinder engines, preferrably in the UK?
This also takes me back to the space frame chassis idea but lets not go there yet .

So buy my v6 and put an i5t in it!
I'll even give you the chassis rails with i5 mounts I saved from another shell
Or wait a bit and I'll get you an s2 avant
