    DIY Coilovers for typ85 quattro

Hi,i want to do a coilover diy on my b2 quattro and dont know where to start?i found few threads on forum but they are about 4 years old so i thought someone probably done a few sets in that time
So my front leg diameter is 50mm and rears are 55.
I was looking at the tread sleaves on ebay where i can weld them on but have no idea on the spring lenght etc.
And do i need 2 springs one long and one short?
The reason i want to do it as i fed up from lowering springs not being stiff enough as i have 3b 20vt conversion in my car.
Do i need to change from oil to gas shocks or i can leave them as it is and just do a coilover conversion?
    Any info would be great

    Have a word with Jogi.

I'm sure from memory he's using type 85 struts with parts bought from Compbrake. Threaded sleeves, spring's/ helper springs and spring plates etc.

Or, you could wait and source S2 drive train and do the swop which most owners have done. This upgrade open's many a door for suspension manufactures. KW, HnR and Koni.

Think long and hard before you go decide to keep standard struts.
Going down the S2 subframe hub route gives you many more damper options all of which are considerably beefier than the ones on the B2.
I was too far down that route to change my mind due to cost implications. THe coilovers were put together for me by Tim and Jan at QRSport using Bilstein B6 inserts.
Can't really give you any more information myself.
I have just had the inserts tweakeked and some slightly softer springs put on (it's my age )

The drive before was extremely stiff, uncomfortably so. Even worse though, the springs did not allow the dampers to do much work and as a result the car would shittle into a corner. Since having the springs redone, I have not had a chance to drive her properly as has developed a boost leak, but the drive is definitely far more forgiving. It's a case of trial and error now, but I may need to lower at the front again having raised the ride. We shall see.
I see you are in Peterborough. We could meet up somewhere (once i finally get car back from garage) for you to have a proper look.

i also want to buy or make coilovers for my b2 coupe quattro.
my car moves far up and down by acceleration and braking on track and i lost to much time in the corners
i also want to keep my origional b2 struts with 4x108 flanges.
for the moment i drive with lower H&R springs and koni sport shocks
maybe I can try to put a little extra spring in the middle of the larger spring?

Spring length will depend on ride height and spring stiffness.

By 2 springs do you mean a helper spring? Helper springs keep everything seated/stop rattles when unweighted if the travel is more than the spring length, which it normally is with coilovers.

Your shocks should be matched to your spring rates, you can get Konis, Bilstiens etc revalved, you can also get shocks shortened.

hi andy,by 2 springs i mean the normal spring on the outside and a smaller one in the middle of the big one,it was just a thought

If you use springs much stiffer than stock you will blow the stock shocks quite quickly, and they may not really damp the spring very well.

A lot of people use Konis with DIY coilovers, you will still blow them if you fit track springs though.

Nick, sorry I meant Paul's original post, you mean like double valve springs.

I have never seen it, I guess it could be made to work.
