    I use this calculator:
Use the paypal fees calculator approximate the amount you may be charged on your transaction

I think it's 3.4% + 20p standard in the UK, not sure in Europe the calculator should cover it though.

you don't need that. when you select how much you're sending you chose the currency and the option that you will pay the fees. Paypal charges you accordingly and the recipient gets exactly the figure he's expecting.

choose the option on the right (not paying for goods because that means the recipient pays the fee)

And then Paypal automatically takes the fee from you.

I'm not sure that that is how it works, what happens on that screen if you select the source of funds as your bank account rather than a visa card? Usually sending a payment to family or friends has no protection and you only pay fees if using a credit or debit card. As per what Paypal show on the desktop app:

It does look a bit misleading how it shows it on the mobile site though.

Fair point regarding the buyer protection. I don't know but would suspect that sending money "to family and friends" would give the same protection. When paying for goods you used to have the option of choosing who pays the fees so you could still pay them but have the transaction go through as paying for goods.

                      20£ would be enough.

That's quite a bit of cash. Might be worth asking the seller for a paypal invoice. That way he has instigated the transaction and you should be well covered. I thinking can choose to build in the fees as he sends the invoice.

Another good tip if you are paying for something in Euros (I realise you aren't in this case) is to use a credit card or debit card that has no foreign transaction fees, like the Halifax Clarity. When you make the payment edit the payment method and there is the option to be charged in Euros, select this and you will save a few % at a minimum compared to the standard exchange rates used by Paypal.
