Because at this time Audi were still building their reputation and putting much effort into building quality. The top B4 models especially the estates just look so right from any angle a real design tour de force! For me the interiors especially on the higher spec models just look so solid and perfectly formed and it was the first time all options were available that still are not really bettered in todays cars just more modern. The same goes for the C4's with even better build quality. What's not to like about them?!

For me it is just a drifferent drivin. No smooth pulling from 2000 to 6000, but a brute kick in the back at 4000. Not nearly quiet and with complete softened behaviour, but motor sounds and kinda feedback from motor and steering. Not women- and beginner-friendly, but manageable if you just WANT to.
It is not that "male" thing, but I think, when people drive a car they have to know and feel, that they are not sitting on the couch in front of the TV.
So my car has to feel like a car- and not like a playstation with tyres. And that´s what old cars do.
(and yes- it´s the sound, the kick at boost, the underdog-behaviour of 20 year old car, the traction, the qualitly, the DIY-ability and and and...but this is what we all knew before

You can use it hard on trackdays for years and 1000's of miles and it just says: "keep it coming, I'll take it. No problem"

I just love the fact that the dog gets to bark and foam at the mouth at unfortunates who have just been wasted!!!

The way it drives and that noise
Recently had people asking 'does the lag annoy me?' NOOOOO! Lags part of the fun.
Modern cars separate the driver so much from the mechanics and feeling of driving it can hardly be called driving.
I will always have a 90's car in my life.Comment

I don't think I could have put it better myself.
A6 3.0Tdi Quattro Avant, putting out not disimilar horsepower to a certain S2 that I used to own, but it's too smooth, too quiet, too Boring to drive, and just doesn't build the way the S2 (and the Ur, even more so....) did. God, how I miss the shove in the back from about 2000 revs onwards. Maybe it's the delay from burying the pedal, and when boost comes along, with the delay its as if someone else is hitting the gas, and your'e just a passenger.....
Modern cars are fantastic at getting you from A to B, but maybe sometimes we want a bit more?Comment

Agree about the lag, OEMs these days pride themselves on making the turbo aspect invisibe to the driver with a nice flat torque curve. Ive just bought an Astra turbo as my daily driver (sorry), it feels the same at 2K rpm as 7K, I had to pop the bonnet to believe the turbo was present - so dull compared to the UR and no sound track at all.Comment

Know where your coming from with the A6 but as an everyday car it's not bad at all!! I went from my daily being a A4 1.9tdi Quattro to this superb A6 3L tdi Quattro Le Mans and it's amazing but I still prefer my S2I don't think I could have put it better myself.
