Audi A8 4.2TDi is the best of the lot by miles, but probably out of your budget.

I had one as a company car, putting aside the rubbish I got from the dealer, my current A6 Biturbo is a better car, the only thing the A8 had it on was the air suspension though I wouldn't want that when its old..

Both great cars to be fair..

            Thanks for reply.

Great that the actual cure was so 'simple' and not the car's fault.

Glad it's back to rude health for you.

Quick and economic, with quattro, and spacious.

I had a similar decision to make - I wasn't doing huge mileage at the time (about 10-12k) but wanted something good for 25k+ if needed with reasonable economy.

I tried to look at a B8 S4 Avant but Audi didn't seem interested in the showroom and after being fobbed off with a "we are busy today, we'll call you back" I didn't hear anything. I wanted diesel for any potential miles increase too.

So, I popped by head in at BMW a couple of weeks later and took a test drive in a new 330d. I really liked it but wanted to stick with 'Quattro' and felt it was a bit too slow compared to the C5 RS6 it was replacing. But the 3-series Touring was fine for size - similar to the A4.

I ordered the 335d Touring Msport+ in the end (Xdrive). Basically what an A4 BiTDI Quattro would be if they made it!

I have been very happy with it, really impressed with Xdrive, feels quite RWD biased and lifetime 40mpg with 45+ on runs has been fantastic. I have covered 55k miles now and it's a really comfy place to be. My only negative has been handling, it's a bit soft and Xdrive comes with SE spec springs! I would have fitted ACS Springs @ a dealer instead of Adaptive Dampers, both about £600, but feels like it should have from the factory.

I decided to keep the car long-term so recently had a conversion done - changed runflats to MPSS, Eilbach/Bilstein suspension (custom damper valving), 390PS/730nm remap (about 3k total but it did need new tyres). It's a real wolf in sheep's clothing - parked next to a new 320d MSport+ it looks identical. However I have timed 0-60 in 4.0s using the launch control or 4.4s without, and the handling is now exceptionally capable and predictable. It's actually a really fun car to drive hard.

So... have a look at the 330d and 335d. Look for about 20-25% discount on a PCP, and there's been some great lease deals around the £400/mo mark recently.

So, I went to the lease company (I'm tied to one specific company so cannot 'shop round' for the best deal...)

It would appear that Belgian lease prices are way higher than the UK... with my budget, I can just about get to a mid spec A4, BMW 3 series, Merc C - certainly nothing interesting and totally depressing... I checked the UK and I could certainly get a decent spec 330D within budget...

For example, in Belgium, 3L TDi A6 is around 300 Euro per month over budget, this is for a base model...

I'm going to be stuck in a piece of $h!t for 3 or 4 years...

I either get a good spec diesel golf (highline 4 motion) or a mid spec A3 or BMW 1series (which is about the nastiest car I have ever had the misfortune to have) or low spec A4 or 3 series...

Lexus CT hybrid (or NX low spec hybrid), petrol...

Why oh why do these idiots insist on a diesel..? quite fancied a Renaultsport Clio. Well within budget for my 10,000 town miles per year... but petrol...

                    Decisions... decisions...
