    Stolen plates

Had the misfortune of having my plates stolen last night while attending a work go-karting event. Retraced the route to see if they had been discarded but as expected I didn't find anything.

Am hopeful the venue had cc TV to see if it was possible to identify the scrote that pulled them off but again not expecting anything.

To be fair the Police were easy to deal with in terms of logging it and getting a crime number. Was told to contact the DVLA and get them to place a marker on the car which proved far easier than the reality.

It appears that although the police can issue a ref number to quote, it appears in deepest Swansea, they have yet to get phone and email installed, I was put on hold 3 times while the lady checked the process which finally ended up with me being asked to 'write a letter to tell us about it'. what...the...f**k?

Write I asked? I haven't written a letter in years, do you not have an email address? No, we need a letter. I asked to be transferred to the 21st Century team who were aware of electronic comms but appears they don't have one....this is the policy we have.

So how long will it take to get the marker up on the registration I enquired from the point where the letter has been recieved? ...4-6wks

Luckily I might be able to accrue some speeding fines, parking offences and petrol theft allegations let alone other fun subjects.

Am staggered how totally and utterly f**ked up this country and its govt depts can be...a simple here is a ref, call and quote it and you are covered can turn into a painfully slow, PITA process where we have to then chase out tails managing the fallout.

On the plus side, Basingstoke Audi made me two new shiny audi plates and the guy happily on charged me for one, realising it was an S2

Jees Dave - thats horrendous - in these days of electronic / paperless car taxation HTF can Swansea not move immediately on this... should only take the click of a fricking mouse to put a marker on your plate in the database. Unbelievable. You would like to think that as you took the correct and formal route of getting police involvement that they could somehow expedite getting a marker on that plate - potentially enabling the clone to be detected anywhere in the country in theory. If we are going to have a 'big brother' system of ANPR, you would like to hope that we lowly plebs would actually get some benefit from it when bad stuff happens.

Dread to think what someone is planning with a cloned car - could just be dodging tax themselves I suppose, but yeah expect to see a clatter of speeding fines landing on your doorstep - send those to Swansea as well - idiots.

They want written proof in the event that something like this happens so they can then tell you they didn't receive the letter or any sort of notification and send you a follow up fine.

Can't be too many coupes/s2's around for someone to want the plates, they will probably end up on an A2 somewhere, b*tards, hope you get a good outcome.

        Bad luck...

Word of advice... send your letter recorded delivery. They lost my V5 but signed for it otherwise I would have needed to take my vehicle for SVA approval... in the end they accepted my facts and issued a new V5.

Refer to the date and time of all your actions so far and the telephone call...

        Hope you don't have problems...

        Good luck!

Time to bung a temporary 250 quid private plate on your S2 for a few years. That way anyone driving around and causing chaos with 'your' original VRN will show as untax, uninsured and out of mot to ANPR / any police cars driving around, and they WILL get stopped.

That's crap you had your plates stolen hope you get sorted quickly. Private plate idea is excellent and worth considering just make sure any correspondance to the DVLA has your crime number from the Police.

Tbh the Police should and I hope have put a marker against your original plates to say they have been stolen. That's way any driving/criminal offences will instantly show as nicked plates.

Unfortunately in the UK it would be guilty until proven innocent. If the stolen plates go through a speed camera at 100 mph, it will be the opening poster getting a court summons etc. If a high powered Audi is used as a get away car in a robbery wearing the plates, the police would come knocking at your door first.

Likewise any petrol station 'bilkings' (a common use for duplicate plates)

It would be up to the registered keeper to prove they were not at that place at that time and the car photographed isn't actually theirs
