Need New Car - Suggestions pls?

So I recently posted about my 2006 Seat Leon TDI FR 150 giving me funny noises. It has become worse and is clearly transmission related. Finally had it in to the mechanic today who had a look and confirmed that the box is indeed fooked at hardly starship miles of 125k. It's not mapped and I hardly drive it hard. Fairly but not hard.

Recon box, new DMF and clutch been quoted around £1350 incl VAT including fitting (I cannot do the work myself). Cambelt is due in the next few months and already spent far too much keeping this car in good shape. It has just been a bit of dud really and unfortunately confirmed many peoples suspicions that post 05 VAG cars are basically *****.

So, kinda thinking I will get shot of this car and although I said I would never do it, might chop it in at a dealer for something much newer. I just cannot bring myself to sell it on to someone knowing the box is on the way out. Someone in the know would clock it but with a tidy up, I am sure I could sell it if I put my mind to it. I am not prepared to do this, so opting for a new car is my preferred course of action.

Not had a second car for a while due to storage issues, so kinda thinking I will combine a daily and toy now. Up for suggestions like 2012(ish) Focus ST's or RS's and similar. I think I will avoid VAG now on principle although I have had a Golf R itch for a while.

Jap route is not for me and not really keen on Bimmers. Any Mercs that are any good?

Thought this forum was probably one of the better ones to get a feel for others experiences, as I know many of you either see many cars or have past experience of plenty.

Cost wise, preferably nothing north of £20k but if it really was awesome enough, I might consider going a bit higher. Want to now avoid diesel.

I have spent a fair bit of time trying to convince myself not to buy John's RS2 Coupe. I love it but I just know from experience that parts are a pain and for a daily, I really could do with something much much newer. 20mpg is ok, anything less is no good. It will get driven honestly with very little pootling.

    Any thoughts welcome.

    Cheers guys.

Might be a bit left-field but I've recently acquired a nearly-new Volvo V40 T5 as our second/daily. Developed on the same platform as the current Focus and the same size, but with Volvo's own take on things, not least more toys/luxury/safety.

The one we have is 2.0litre, about 250bhp, 4WD, 8-speed auto and does 0-60 in under 6 seconds, so not a rocketship but suitably brisk.
Ours is a Cross-Country, then there are "standard" ones and the lower sportier editions which are called R-design.

Good shout, thanks for that and I also like left field. Did recently take a small look at one of those C30 Polaris things but reviews were a bit hit and miss. Will deffo take a look at V40.

Quite like the look of those but the cheaper ones are still over budget (not by much though) Nothing wrong with comfy seats ha ha ha.

My mate is nagging me to shell out on repairs, keep the dagdag going and buy a motorbike. Two wheels not for me though, my temperament does not suit them. Compromise is sorting the Dagdag and waiting for a house (still) before getting a proper aggressive toy.

                  Cheers Chris

Principle dictates that I cannot possibly buy a modern VAG car, so Skodas are not an option. Kinda looking for something a bit more exciting. Deffo not against a Fast Ford though. They seem to be getting better and better with time. Fiesta is too small for the fishing and shooting stuff, so would have to be at least a Focus but the ST's and RS's look a good giggle.

The Merc is maybe to grown up for me (and too costly if I am being honest)

There is always the option of fixing the crudbucket and waiting for a house to come up with a garage but i've been looking for ages and the market is soooo slow for the type of place I am after. if that did happen, it would take the sort of control I don't have to not buy a very very well sorted S2 again. It would have to be very good though, as I just cannot be bothered with the parts issues. Problem is that I am no mechanic, so I am also paying someone to fix it on top of trying to source the bloody parts at the same time.

I do miss my Coupe though. My hand was forced though and then Ben went and sold it real quick himself. Not sure where it ended up actually. Not seen it back on here. It was a real goodun and those brakes made your eyes bleed

You have quite obviously been a closet Mercman for at least a couple of years. I recall many a comment you have made ha ha. Annoyingly, I am getting slightly older which means it is now ok for me to give them serious consideration. Maybe not old enough for the Volvo and I know the Mercs are totally different beasts but I have always had a soft spot for the Volvo's. If they were a bit more pointy and harder around the corners, I reckon I would have had one by now. I like quirky.

Maybe the Merc would actually work a little too well for me. Mind you, working is better than not working.
