Agree, getting older means Mercs begin to appeal. Plus they have really sorted out their styling in the last 5-6 years, and the AMG models have a sharper edge than before. And then there is the noise....

I spent a lot of time recently looking at various cars before buying the V40. The Mercedes, especially the AMG was ruled out very quickly because of interior styling.
For me - too German, too plastic, too hard, too technical. And very boring to drive.
My personal favourite was a Jaguar XE and it definitely had the best tech, but SWMBO wanted something a bit shorter.....Comment
