    Question for the MOT testers

I noticed a small nick in one of my rear inner CV boots during my pre MOT inspection.
It's about 10mm long, and the boot looks tired, rubber is starting to craze between the ribs. I have ordered a pair of new boot kits to do both inner rears, but for logistic reasons I could do with getting the car MOT'd this week and won't have time to replace the boot till next week. Is it a failure (provided they spot it) or just an advisory? FWIW it's not throwing grease out yet.

    Any testers opinions welcome

Hi Alex, I'm not a tester, but I can tell you that my local garage used super glue to repair a small spilt to get an MOT pass on the understanding that I'd later replace the boot. I'd suggest you do that in the interim. HTH.

I used to test many moons ago......I think the fail criteria for boots is if it is insecure, leaking and/or cannot protect from ingress of dirt........or something like that.
Sounds like yours will be ok. And as above, super glue or tiger seal or such like.

        Bang on son!

I've had more than my fair share of these critters lately on the tdi.

Hi Alex.I'm working with few testers and there is a few different opinions but yours sounds like it should be ok.Main thing is -if the grease is leaking in to the brakes area,it's guaranteed fail but yours is nowhere near that so it will be fine

Think I will get it booked in, I can take it back for a retest if need be, not a major drama just a pain in the butt.

Depends on the testers interpretation of excessive.

2.5 Front Suspension, Wheel Bearings and Drive Shafts

              Method of Inspection

              C. Front Wheel Drive Shafts and Couplings
Inspect as follows while the front wheels are
              jacked up.
              1. With the vehicle in neutral gear, rotate the
wheels when they are on each lock in turn, and
check visually the gaiters of the constant
velocity joints while the pleats are expanded.

              Reason for Rejection

              1.
              a. A constant velocity joint gaiter missing or
              excessively damaged, deteriorated or
insecure to the extent that it would no
longer prevent the ingress of dirt etc.
              b. a drive shaft constant velocity joint
              excessively worn or insecure
              c. a drive shaft coupling excessively worn or
              insecure
              d. a drive shaft flexible rubber or fabric
coupling unit severely cracked or breaking
              up
              e. a drive shaft flexible rubber or fabric
              coupling softened by oil contamination,
insecure or fouling any other part of the
              vehicle.

Clean it up and blob of Tigerseal will get you through, 100%.

The rear CV's don't move much so the repair will last for ages, hell when I was in working in a garage we'd do it on front outers for owners with no money...much to my disgust.

                        Thanks all for your input
I'm going to goop up the split with some Tigerseal and give it a punt. Worst case I have to take it back for retest once I've fitted the new boots.
