Advice Required on my A6 please!

Hi! I am after a little bit of advice on my A6 3L TDI quattro saloon its a 2008 model and my everyday car love driving it but my main problem is - its bloody chewing away the tyres is this standard practice? its sitting on 19 inch alloys (car is a Le mans special ed) Since January last year when I bought the car I have replaced all 4 tyres twice doing 40k miles in the process and I have just replaced the front for a 3rd time now. My first 2 replacements I used were Avon tyres thinking they were a good hard wearing tyre I have now changed to Dunlop. Now the advice am after is the front have 2 super new dunlops with 8mm of thread and the back have 4mm sitting on Avons do I change the back as I dont want to break to the differential with having 8mm on the front and 4mm on the back? I know its daft but just want to check before shelling out another £300 on 2 more tyres!! Thanks in advance

Any reason why your on the Dunlops? I've got nothing but praise for the Goodyear Assymetric 2 tyres on the S6.

Regarding the wear i would say 20k is probably about right Anthony, your car must weigh a lot.Our B5 A4 tdi is a heavy car and it too has needed too many new sets in 10 years for my liking about a new front set every 20k miles.

There's nothing with our car or wrong with the settings on the front suspension it's just a heavy car like yours that handles extremely well without you realising it unlike on older cars, so the tyres are taking it all without you realising.

The materials used in todays rubber i'm sure is inferior in the wear stakes for the medium range tyres in my experience even on top brands. Our B5 tdi now rides on brand new 18 year old spare wheel/tyres for the last 2 years and are wearing extremely well, better than we're used to and still look like new in the sidewalls i.e. no cracking which you cannot say that about todays tyres. I claimed against Michelin primacy tyres a few year back now for sidewall cracking after only 18 months and 3k miles and got 75% of my money back.

Will be interesting if others agree with me.

I've had Dunlops on both my A5s. First one got about 30k from the 20". Current one is on 19" and they've done around 18k. Still plenty of life showing.

If you move the Dunlops to the rear and fit the Avons to the front, you'll be changing them quite soon. It's normal to get longer out the rears by about 50%

What load index are the tyres ? Think mine are 96 Y rated. You'll need similar or higher on the A6

I like dunlops have them on the S2 and they are great. The avons I replaced had 4mm still on them its the inner top that has been ripped off but not all the way round the tyre even the guys at the tyre place couldnt understand saying its not tracking as it would be all round the tyre and it was beyond the rubber and through to the tyre wires!! but they still had 4mm on tyre and only 18k miles done a little annoying!!

              I've got 19"s on mine as well (2010 A6 3.0Tdi q Avant).
I've had it close to 3 years, and was shod with Mich PS2 at the time (strangely- the spare was a Dunlop Maxx (??) ), and as the sticker on the B pillar suggested Mich's I decided to stick with them, until the last 2 (front) by which time the Mich's just seemed to be getting a tad expensive (from memory, £165 from Kwikfit), so at the suggestion of one of my colleagues who had a 2.0T A4 shod with Continentals; I went with them, at £299/2 fitted at work.
I certainly don't drive like the proverbial Vicars wife, but don't abuse the A6 either
For a big estate car that weighs close to 2 tons, it handles very well indeed, and has been close to the limit on many occasions, but I have never minded spending money on tyres as they always wear evenly, with no hint of either shoulder going bald prematurely.
I did have 4 wheel alignment done by Audi several months ago, and they didn't suggest that there was any wear in bushes/balljoints, even at 167k miles.

I know you have been advised that yours doesn't need an alignment check, but from my experience- premature tyre wear, including bald shoulders, most definately is not a characteristic of the car (Mine also does much more than it's fair share of caravan towing, with cruise set at the legal limit)

Dare I suggest a 4 wheel alignment check?

I have exactly the same car, bar the fact its an estate and manual, they are really powerful cars, lots of torque and pretty heavy. I changed out my wheels for 18" and then bought Goodyear Eagle F1 AS2's they have been spot on and still going strong after 25k. You can only really get away with running a premium grade tyre on such a car IMHO.

Tony I think that might be a option I will take up I know the bushes are worn and shockers arent great had all the back done so am guessing that might also be a reason? And yes agree with you and Treebirch these are truly amazing cars I feel priviledged to use it as my daily car

What sort of mileage has yours done, Anthony?

(regarding them being amazing cars- there was a lad in a 59plate 300bhp Focus RS who was a little surprised by one, last winter; but that's another story)

Tony I bought it January last year and it had 110,000 miles it now has 158,000 and I can fully understand you surprising the chap in the Focus a few guys were a little surprised at mine when we did the Kielder meet last year lol!!!

What do you reckon from my first comment on this thread would you change all 4 tyres or am I save with a 4mm difference?

Surely that's what the centre diff is there for??
Put it this way- imagine the car was new, driven by (probably) a company director who doesn't know or really care what is going on under the bonnet. All he cares about is the cost of another set of tyres as/when they're needed (and the fact that he can still get to work in the snow, when his neighbor's 530d is abandoned in the driveway whilst he walks to the train station).
I know we all love our cars, and that's why we spend so much time on this Forumbut Audi designed them for us to drive, and not worry about

FWIW, that's my opinion anyway, and I would carry on driving it (like I stole it) until it needs new rubber, and then change axle sets.

Winter is coming, and it'll soon be time to show lesser car owners the error of their ways
