I would lightly lubricate the threads to ensure you get a reasonably accurate inital torque figure and use the follow up degrees figure. You don't need thread lock if you follow the recommended settings.

Agree. Think people dab some lock for piece of mind as they try and get the 450 Nm . I've a v big torque wrench that will go 500 so no probs there just a case of me hanging off it !!

I dipped the main bolt in blue loctite. Still going strong.

                I always thread lock them.

Thread lock -what harm can it possibly do?

Also has the benefit of sealing the threads which prevents corrosion, and therefore seizing, and lubricates the bolt as it goes in as well, so you are more likely to get to the proper clamping force than with nothing (also the reason oil is mentioned above).

Think the factor manual only requests some sealant to go on there, so sort of thread lock but not quite. Don't forget that if you don't have access to a massive torque wrench, you can do 200Nm + 180 degrees, which is nearly impossible without a very long bar!

I'd use thread sealant NOT loctite. Last time I cracked one off that was Locktited on, it took my body weight on a 6ft scaffold bar to undo the thing = roughly 1500nm.

So what does the the oem manual say ? As a little confusing, some say always and some people say never. !?

I can do the 450Nm with torque wrench . Well I say that the wrench will do it but it's if I can get the force to reach the click !!??

Extract from the Bentley manual :

Fig. 11 Removing and installing vibration damper
                        Tightening torque
                        - With spanner 2079: 350 Nm (258 ft lb)
                        - Without spanner 2079: 450 Nm (332 ft lb)
                        - Use brace 3256.
                        - Coat threads and contact surfaces of bolt head with sealing paste AMV 188 001 02.

But as many say they use a little loctite blue which isn't exactly a locking compound :

Loctite® Threadlocker Blue 242® is designed for the locking and sealing of threaded fasteners which require normal disassembly with standard hand tools. The product cures when confined in the absence of air between close fitting metal surfaces. It protects threads from rust and corrosion and prevents loosening from shock and vibration. Loctite® Threadlocker Blue 242® is particularly suited for applications on less active substrates such as stainless steel and plated surfaces, where disassembly is required for servicing.

                        So ... ???!!

                          No loctite is required.

The sealing paste is normally used on the mating surfaces only

I'd like to know more about the specs of:

                            "sealing paste AMV 188 001 02"

                            and go from there.

Otherwise, I'd stick with a basic lubricant like Loctite Nickel Anti-Seize (or motor oil). I used that nickel dope on the last one I did with no issues.

                              I made a video for you (10 years old AMV 188 001 02):

I would never use Threadlocker on the crank bolt - 450 NM seems never to come loose. The AMV 188 001 02 is to prevent the bolt threads from water.

On the threads, the AMV will dry out but will not realy glue the bolt.
