Think what I'm gonna do - as space is limited in garage, and having hoist in front of car , though I could pull car back slightly - is remove engine out the front leaving gearbox in situ- that way no messing with front driveshafts or propshaft etc.. And can do clutch straight into box , and tidy engine ect while it's out .

Remove subframe, disconnect everything and then just lower the lot down in one go, rather than trying to shoehorn it up and out the front at an angle.
So further to this, would it be better to refit engine and box up into car as I'm gonna have subframe off also, do everything then raise the lot back into the car ?

I fitted engine with gearbox in situ, if I was you and all that's out I would drop box and re-fit it all.

Yep. My gearbox is still in at the moment but engine out. But gonna drop it with the subframe.

You need a load leveler to do this, but they are not expensive.
Fit box onto block, then get them into position below the car, then just lift up into place and bolt up the engine mounts. Then put a jack or support under the back of the gearbox, remove engine hoist, refit subframe - it's really that easy
