    Breakdown Cover Renewal costs

So the renewal letter arrives, telling me that we had been members since Jan '08 and that 'Including Admin charges' the total would be £179.99 (for 2 of us, personally, without Homestart).

Next move- look on line, and without giving any address, etc. the quote comes back at £129.99 Inc Homestart

I then call them, and ask for the cost of adding Homestart, and they come back with £248!!!

I told them that I had their companies' website page open in front of me, and that it includes Free Homestart, and I was told 'That's an introductory offer'....... So What??

I very calmly told her that as I only have to tell her to cancel my policy, and buy it on line (altho Seething inside!), to get the same cover for £130.

Eventually she tells me that she can do it for the same amount, dropping from £248 to £130 inside 5 mins.

8 years (without a single callout!) loyalty would appear to count for a Big Fat Zero

As Terry Wogan (RIP) used to say- 'Is It Me?'

Tony out of our principal I would have cancelled the policy and gone else where if they can drop that amount in 5 mins. Am with the AA n its costs 17.99 a month full cover n am happy with that as you get very good discounts with national tyres and as you are probably fully aware the A6 eats the tyres!!!

This thing with insurance, breakdown cover, sky subs, mobiles, broadband etc etc does my swede in. They rely on people being lazy and don't give a **** about loyalty. Its all wrong but fair play for doing the right thing.

              Really?

On the subject of the A6, Bud- My Secret Santa Prezzie from someone in work was a set of 4 lights for under the door cills (the ones that illuminate the floor when the doors are open) which project the Audi Logo onto the floor (prob 18" dia).
They're on Ebay, and they look fantastic

Don't even get me started on this. Just had this exact same thing with my house insurance. Renewal comes through for a ridiculous price and at least 100 quid more than last year, doesn't cover something I want covered. Online quote is half the price including aforementioned extra. Shouldn't have had to spend as much time and hassle as I did trying to get it sorted. But we got there in the end. And I agree, there is zero loyalty in insurance these days.

Edit - and also as above, I'm now kicking myself for going with the auto renewal the year previously, it went up 50 quid and I didn't question it

I had this same thing last year R*C wanted £140+ without home start for 2 person cover towed to any destination in the uk after being £100 year before, phone A* whom I left who quote 99 cool I'll go with that R*C then match.
Then I renew my mums home insurance with AA part of deal is discounted breakdown cover (I'm named on her policy) call and I'm quoted £75 for same cover result.
Sad that loyalty accounts for nothing so play them at there own game is my view.

For anyone that doesn't know, many companies who offer breakdown cover as an add-on to their motor insurance policies use garage agents to provide this service. Knowledge, competence, equipment and eagerness to repair might not be what you would expect as many agent's will push to "lift and shift" (maybe due to what I've just mentioned or maybe because they'll get more money to recover). Fair enough if there's a con-rod poking through the block but if your car just needs a simple repair or part fitting then the inconvenience of being recovered as opposed to getting fixed could be massive?
Some here might rather not have someone they don't know attempt a repair on their car?.......a straight recovery might be preferred?
But some might rather a fully equipped "service van" with trained staff arrive, because if nothing else no-one can possibly carry enough "emergency tools" in their boot!?
Some might get comfort in knowing that if their loved ones are in a breakdown situation then they'll be treated in a professional manner, by a professional.
It is a gamble, no-one knows if/when their car will throw a strop, you can only do so much preventative maintenance! .......knowing what to expect from your breakdown provider should NOT be a gamble.
Regarding costs, I'd agree with previous comments-play them off against each other for the best deal but remember you get what you pay for!......and the discount's you get from one company on tyres, airport parking, restaurants, motorway services and the likes could easily pay for the membership?

                        Just saying.
