    Horrible thoughts, but...

I've been thinking that I might have to let the S2 go sometime soon. We're planning to move house and I need all the cash I can lay my hands on and will need a cheaper to run and more practical car for the future...

If I were to sell the S2, what do you think I could get for it, and what do you think I should get in its place? I would be considering something like an A4 Avant - are the 1.8T quattro Avants any good, or what about the 1.9TDi quattro Avants? I know a few chaps here have some of these as their daily drivers? What are they like?

Stupidly, I looked on autotrader at S4 Avants and RS2s and started thinking "ooh they're not too expensive" but they're not exactly going to be cheaper to run than my S2 now are they?!

My S2 is a 91 3B with 125k on the clock, a few subtle mods and is in great condition. And working Aircon. What are they genuinely going for these days? I paid 5k for her nearly 3 years ago. I see them around the place for a ridiculous range of prices anywhere between 3-7k it would seem...

if you want my opinion, keep it. getting another car is no guarantee of cheaper running. cars are expensive to run full stop.

That's a good point I guess: maybe someone wants to swap their Avant for my Coupe?!

Spooky Dan. I have recently been having similar awful thoughts. Selling my red 91 3b and replacing it with something like a 1.8t of 1.9tdi a4 avant.
Problem for me is my car is running like a pig at the moment so dont think anyone would wanna buy it. Plus I only have to look out of the window at her and I get a tear in my eye.

I would be absolutely gutted to see her go, but have recently been realy struggling with keeping her running.

My advice to my self and dan is keep her.

Yep thought similar but then i htought well I actually know its current condition, minor faults etc compared to looking for something else. Also compared to whats been spent maintaining it versus the price it'd be sold for it makes no sense...so just spent £550 finally getting the brakes done. In all honesty I couldn't really sell it - just buy something else to park next to it

Just been through this one myself... bought my own place (moved in 2 weeks ago), currently horribly broke, but kept the S2.

Looked at the numbers (and made myself cry) but kinda figured that to get anything acceptable which is more reliable/cheaper to run I'd have to spend more in the first place... which would have ruled out buying the flat. Over a couple of years it wouldn't actually make any difference on the money, and it'd certainly be less fun.

Besides, with the back seat down (coupe), and the passenger seat right forward, I can still get a 200+ cm pack of flat pack furniture in the back and enjoy the drive home!

                    Ck.
Shocked, exhausted, hosed, bushed, dumped, chipped, mounted, filtered, gauged, packed, intermittantly wiped and braked. I mean broken. Now, about the car...

BTDT and sold her. 4 months later bought another one.

Unless the S2 is something to get you from A to B, it is hard to "make do" or drive something sensible. The best thing I did was get a sensible car - polo tdi, audi 1.9tdi, 80 tdi to have as well - then you really appreciate the S2 when you jump in it. (actually delete the a4 - after driving that with the adjustable steering cloumn it really showed up the crap driver position I have to suffer in the S2)

If it is just down to money, the S2 would have to go - it needs cared for!

This is a simple equation for me. The S2 is in all honesty a toy. I have always had a "toy" car, for as long as i can remember. There have been allsorts, from the sublime to the ridiculous. If i sold the S2 tomorrow, i would be losing money, have always done so on most of my "toy" cars with a few notable exceptions. I have long since accepted this and my "daily driver" has been a £500.00 ex repmobile that i quite simply could care less about and only change the engine oil regularly because i have some mechanical sympathy for the engine. Outside of that, don't try cutting me up because it will cause panel damage:-)
This state of affairs didn't just happen overnight and many of my "classics" (well, they were to me) were also my daily drivers. Accept that you either do or don't want to drive something as entertaining as the S2 in whatever state of tune. Or buy a shopping trolly and once again dream about owning a supercar. Or keep the car and give up smoking (keeping the car wins hands down here) or stop going to the pub as much or whatever, or buy the shopping trolley and start daydreaming.
