    Wireless Networks???

Does anyone know much about these. I need to set up a small network in my new flat with a mate who lives upsatirs. Just wondered what sort of things we are going to need to get. It will only be for leaching junk from his PC

all you need is a router and a wireless card, about 80 quid should do it,easy enough to set up..

Actually, two wireless cards would do it because as i understand it, both of these computers are connected to the internet on their own broadband connection. You could just set the cards up as an ad hoc network. Not an elegant solution and one that would cause inevitable problems. There is a much better way, but it's late, i'm tired and at this stawe of the game, in need of all the beuty sleep i can get:-) I'll sleep on it.

PS Back on topic: get the security sorted on the wireless network so nobody except the two of you can use it. I would imagine you don't want to leave it open so that someone you don't know can leech information off either computer or use your 'net connection (if applicable).

Bufallo Wireless router with card bundle for £80 with nice and secure single click AOSS connection which makes the airlink nice and secure....

I used to have a Dlink624 then the power supply went pop setting it up wasn;'t that intuitive but it worked well

tom take a look on www.scan.co.uk or www.ebuyer.com they often have bundles on there of a wireless router and card.

Do either of the PC's already have wirless network cards fitted?

[QUOTE=Greg_S]tom take a look on www.scan.co.uk or www.ebuyer.com they often have bundles on there of a wireless router and card.

I would stay well clear of ebuyer as I have had some bad experiences with them. They are cheap but if anything goes wrong with your order they are an absolute b**tard to get in contact with. They dont even have a phone number you can call. I use www.dabs.com www.novatech.co.uk www.scan.co.uk and www.micrdirect.co.uk. All reliable in my experiences.

Also tried different wireless routers and I personally like netgear.

If both computers have thier own broadband connections you should be able to get a pci card for each machine (bout £20 each)

Or if you wanna do it realy cheaply you could just buy a realy long crossover cable.

                          Thread hijack!

I know about as much about computers as a lemon, so quite little

I have broadband running through a set top box from NTL.I got someone round to set/configure this up. Was working absolutely fine, and has been for several months....
Now about a week ago, got a phone call from NTL, they decided to upgrade me to 1 meg - whatever that is. All of a sudden, I cannot get onto the net using wireless on my laptop, I have to plug in the lead in the side. Now would this be because I am getting a different IP address, different to the one before the 1 meg upgrade If so does this mean i have to have the router reset or something

Sounds like you need to check your wireless config jubjub and make sure any encryption is set correctly[B]

Have you tried calling Dabs? A tenner if you can get through using a telephone number from their website. Hopeless. But that applies to all (major) hardware suppliers now, they are unable to provide proper support as their margins are so small, their profits are equally tight. Yer pays yer money.....
