I think the rs2 is an true brutal drivers car and nothing has been made like it since the boost on them is phenomenal!
Oh i don't know, my modified S2 will leave a standard, and even a "chipped" RS2 for dead, couple of other notables around here can do the same. Like Tom's as has been mentioned. Plenty of others too. Remember this, if you buy an RS2, you can't really modify it. Okay a chip, hoses and a few ither bolt ons like a HID kit. You will destroy it if you do. An S2 on the other hand was created to be modified, i merely refer to the RS2 as an example of this.
The reason, it is believed, that Porsche modified the Avant and not the Coupe version is that they didnt want to produce something in direct competition with their own vehicle sales, a similar looking type of vehicle. Having said that, it is often mooted that the RS2 project saved Porsche as their sales were appalling at the beginning of 1994, which is when the RS2 project was born. IIRC.

Graham, did you mean destroy it physically or aesthetically (or both?) by modding an RS2? You might well destroy them (no experience whatsoever!!), however, i have read of RS2s running over 600 bhp . You'll know far more than me about any of this stuff, but if that's not some quite serious mods then i don't know what is!
S2s do seem like a near-perfect car for tinkering with, though.

I would imagine that Graham is refering to the value of it. No point in buying an RS2 for £12-15k then changing the turbo, em, intercooler, brakes etc.... Much better off to buy an S2 for, I dunno, say £5k, then spend the extra modding that.
It will be far quicker than an RS2, but it will still never be an RS2......
Dean is spot on with his assertion. I was sloppy in my statement, sorry. I too know of RS2's with big power. They are however, no longer RS2's, if you know what i mean. Also correct about it never being an RS2, if it doesn't say so on the log book, then it isn't! Mine does a good impersonation of an RS2 in looks, it isn't one though, but will beat one on the street every time, as long as the RS2 wasn't heavily modified.
You can make an S2 more of a "personal" car, you shouldn't really do this to an RS2.

I think AAH, Robo and Timucin would disagree with you on that one mate.
I have an avant that was immediatelly converted to RS2 the minute it entered the country(that was its future plans)...so technically,i DONT have an RS2 even if every little detail inside and outside says its an RS2!!!
Then again,in Greece it was nearly impossible to bring such a car in the country with all those rediculus custom laws(that still exist by the way),cause its price would be enormous.Nevertheless,it was much cheaper to buy a regular quattro avant(like the one i have)and import all engine parts,to fully convert to RS2....Only...there is no sunroof....maybe i should think about getting one....
Anyway,i was wondering, since RS2 is basically an ABY engine with parts that make it an ADU engine, why wouldnt someone be able to get even 600-700hp out of it if he wanted to?Besides those engines where built to last.
If i were in England though,i would surely choose an S2 avant to further imporve, rather than the RS2.Solely for the cash payed.Inside, the S2 has nothing to be jealous of the RS2,and if one wanted the recaro seats, with 1500euro he can fit no problem.
As for the engine,im sure it would be easier to improve. The only thing i would ever do on the RS2'replica'hehe would be recondition the engine,by means replace all engine parts with new,of the same kinds.315,or 370 that i have are more than enough to improve.BEsides i like to have a long lastig car,not a dragster!
Different horses here folks. I actually agree with Graham that the market value of a proper RS2 can be damaged with heavy modifications / big turbos and the like... His synopsis of why Porsche agreed to hotrod the Avant instead of the Coupe is also valid - coupled to the fact that Audi couldn't sell enough Avants at the time - there was rather more bodyshells lying around than they would like. So the RS2 was born !
It doesn't bother everyone, and I don't expect to get complete agreement on that but the 2nd hand car market generally shys away from heavily modified cars - particularly rare and special ones.
The insurance cost on an RS2 for a 20yr old kid is bound to be ludicrously high. As an old bloke I have to say justifiably so - to some degree anyway. Sorry if I'm generalising here !!!
The potential RS2 owner has to ask himself why he is attracted to the car -
Because its a wonderful estate car or because it has a Porsche badge and goes like stink ?
You could have both worlds for a fraction of the price with an S2 Avant - except the Porsche badge to impress the girls and your mates down the pub. <Contraversial>
Sorry if I sound sickofantic here... bear with me... I'm trying to make a point...
The only thing that separates the RS2 from an S2 Avant is some bolt on parts, a software upgrade and some (expensive) styling goodies. Sure an S2 Avant cloned to look and perform like (or better) than an RS2 will never be a proper RS2 (and carry its higher market value) but I bet you'll spend a whole lot less money.
An RHD RS2 is going to more expensive than LHD in the UK - the reason being the additional insurance premium you will pay on LHD. Now unless you are travelling to the continent a lot, I totally don't understand why you would want to be sitting on the wrong side of the car in the UK everyday. It would drive me nuts, but I'm not as tolerant as you might be.
If insurance is the killer on a heavily modded S2 Avant then enjoy the S2 Avant in standard fashion with upgraded brakes, ARBs and chips to get nearer to stock RS2 performance. You'll have much more fun with that cos it looks like ****** all, but will embarrass a great many cars on the road today without advertising itself with a Porsche badge.
Just my tuppence worth - a tidy S2 Avant can be found quite cheaply these days !

Yep, I would agree entirely with what Paul just said!
I think a standardish RS2 will always attract a buyer who is prepared to pay good money for an original low production run supercar and be worth more than a modified one, even if the modded one is quicker etc.
I could not cope with LHD either...
Cheers,
Steve.

If i knew 7 years ago what I know now I probably would have left my RS2 as standard-ish for many of the reasons that have been mentioned. Having said that 7 years ago I wasn't aware of he iconic status the car was going to achieve. More to the point I have enjoyed the upgrade and modding process and REALLY REALLY enjoyed the results. At the end of the day enjoyment is what it is all about rather than wrapping it in cotton wool and worrying about the resale value and as I cant see myself selling the car, I am happy.

p.s. Being a member of this forum makes it impossible to resist the temptation to make "improvements"
I do have a lot of empathy for what Angus says here - cars are meant to be driven after all. There are far too many wonderful bits of exotic machinery tucked away in air conditioned sheds for my liking.
<mild_rant_mode>
'Oh I start the engine every two weeks to make sure its OK' - they say - which is nonsensical as all that idling just wastes fuel and causes the bores to glaze over...
Get the thing out there to enjoy being driven and for others to see and hear for goodness sake.
