    Strange

Well had a strange thing happen yesterday. Took the car to my VAG specialist, who looks after my car, to get the handbrake cables replaced. He rang me up to say they had trouble getting the car started (with the key) but they managed. The only problem now is that now its running, they turned the key off and removed it from the car, yet it still runs . He stalled it but the ignition stays on.
I went up and dismantled it thinking it would be the plastic module on the back of the ignition barrel (I recall someone on here with that fault). Pulled it all apart to find that the bar in the barrel itself, that locates into the plastic module, had snapped clean off . Anyone else seen this before??

Wait a minute - are you saying that the metal bit has broken?!!

I've had the plastic bit fail on two different cars - but this looks strange.

yes this is very common amongst 80,100,early a4,(1987-96) had this a few times,
when replacing be sure to take the barrel and cylinder to check and compare with
replacement, as there are a couple of types with slight differences in length and
        location point

I think the return sping in the plastic ignition switch is too strong for the job it dose and puts all the strain on that small aluminum peg, then over years aluminum get
          brittle

I had this happen on MY91 3B. The metal peg broke off but the car wouldn't start. Happened on the day we were going on holiday to France with the car Just glad it snapped before we set off. Quick trip to All Audi sorted it

I too had a problem with the ignition of my 2.8 Coupe, which was the white plastic part, but heard from my Audi specialist friend that the pins can break.

It occured to me at the time that whilst mine was apart, I should see if I could get one made in SS, but my mate fixed it before I could get back to the garage to take a look (damn hard life having a best mate who was VAG trained and owns a garage

Anyone on here know if it would be easy to do?

              Cheers n

Quite common for the peg to snap, there is an improved version from VAG now, it's slightly thicker, more D - shaped. Make sure you purchase the right one.
