You need the correct tool to undo the top mount nut. There are few threads on it somewhere if you search.

I made about 8 of these strut top tools, they are basically a 12.9 grade M20 cap head bolt with the threaded part turned off leaving the shaft, then center bored out to clear the threads, cut and file two teeth on the end face. Cut the end of the bolt with the teeth on to a length off about 25mm long. Then weld it to a piece of inch strip, as long as you want, (8" is fine) and using the bored hole as a guide, drill through the inch strip. Dress it up so there's no rags and hey presto theres a strut top spanner.
In the picture there is the spanner and the nut above it i used to work from which is mangled from the effects of trying to get it off without the propper tool.

In the middle of doing my avant's 4 corners (standard bilsteins I'm afraid ) and I use an old 15mm (IIRC) socket with the tabs cut as above. It has flats on the opposite end for a spanner and works pretty well. Not as impressive as Graham's though
Just about to do my rears, need to work out how to disassemble the rear trim - it's all much better screwed together than the Passat!

Thanks to the avant guys who have done their own rear shockers for the heads up about not needing to remove the interior trim...
Suppose i ought to have checked the FA first...
