    whats the right fluid

i'm using quattro turbo power steering rack and s2 power steering pump . i put mineral ( green) fluid in and the power steering rack started leaking . if i use red fluid (same as auto transmission) will it be ok?its not going to damage the seals in anyway is it ? i know you can use one type for both but not both .please only answer if you are hundred % and have had same experience . i've got 1 power steering rack and 1 power steering pump leaking i think due to wrong fluid.

if your pump is leaking then you might as well change it while your down there and only use VAG fluid. if you use the wrong fluid your sensor start to tell you that your fluid level is low and that can be a real nightmare.

      i hope this helps

Trust me - any of that ATF fluid is utterly wrong for the S2 hydraulic system. It is not compatible with the system - it won't work properly... and when you remember the hydraulic system is designed to give assistance to steering and brakes it is a very serious matter.

You must only use the VAG fluid numbered G002000 - it is a green coloured mineral fluid and its VERY cheap and EASY to get from dealerships or aftermarket places like GSF or ECP.

If your system leaks then it needs to be properly repaired. Putting the wrong fluid in will only make matters worse long term.

the reason i said red fluid is because the quattro used to use that .because i've got quattro power steering rack i'm thinking weather it will damage the seals on the rack ,not too worried about the power steering pump because its off s2 anyway so i know its compatible .will the g002000 fluid damage the seals on the quattro rack ?

Surely it would be better to NOT construct a hydraulic system from a variety of incompatible parts. All of the components on the hydraulic system must be compatible so you can use the correct oil for the entire system.

i know what you are saying but thats what happens when you do conversions .its not for s2 but sport quattro replica . do you think the system will work if i use red fluid ?other than the pump everything else is standard quattro stuff which ran on red fluid. thanks .

Can't you fit a hydraulic pump from a UR ?

That would give you a system compatible with the old red stuff...

If thats not possible then you'd best get advice from a hydraulic specialist to see what is required to convert the S2 pump somehow - assume its mostly to do with seals though I suspect there is more to it than that...

Only if its a pre-'87 (WR) ur. The later MB and RR used Mineral oil, same as the S2.

The G002000 part number never changed when they converted from red to green. So it was possible to run the old systems on the green fluid. You can't run a new system on the red fluid.
