Just got back from Alton Towers - RITA Queen of Speed is fantastic! What a buzz
Got me thinking, have any of you guys with 400+ bhp been on it, and how does it compare? Obviously no-one's doing 60 in 2.5 secs, but how far off does 4.31 secs (Doug ) feel?
Nothing feels fast for long...

You'd need a lot more than 400bhp to it 60 in the S2 in 2.5 seconds. Wow !
Not much of a rollercoaster fan myself - got scared rigid by an old wooden wonder at a Paramount park outside Toronto many years ago. I swear that thing was about ready to jump off the rails. Its the feeling of absolutely no control which I don't like !
Think of it this way. The feeling that you get when your in an airplane at take-off x 10= the launch acceleration of a 500+ hp S2
It's mind blowing when you experience it for the first time.

lets say 400 and 500bhp cars. whats the difference in "feel" lol
well.. this is one sh*t fast, and that one is sh*t fast plus 100 bhp
Well I had a ride in Jaap his urquattro with 380 HP RS2 engine. That thing is FAST. I equals an 400 HP S2 I think. That car is impresively fast, altough when stepping in a 500 HP car that does make a big difference. A 100 HP more is what the average saloon car has on its own to haul its @ss from A to B. So a 100 more is a lot.
the comparison is on a scale of "normal" cars like an audi 2,2l atmospherical and an S2 standard.
the best and cheapest way to feel a 500 HP car is to take out a race bike. That gives you almost the same power feel.
Cheers

My 12R will do 0-150 in a fraction over 10 secs...as will a Hayabusa.
However, this is absolutey pedestrian compared to Steve Venables 12R which is the fastest bike in the UK at the moment over the 1/4...conceivably the fastest 12R in the world?
I recently bought some bits off Steve to rebuild my 12R.
At Santa Pod recently at a 200mph.org.uk event, his bike ran a number of 7 sec passes over the 1/4. I took a mate who had never been before and he was gob-smacked.
The best terminal was 194 for a 7.8 sec pass. The bike still wants to wheelie through 180mph. He offers select takers rides but having seen the bike go down the strip, so far no-one has taken him up on the offering!
I'm sorry but that is FAST.
The bike spits out in excess of 550rwhp (he has never dynoed it because he doesn't care), which I believe means a power:weight ratio of in excess of 2500hp:ton.
A 500hp S2 isn't fast by those standards.
There are few 1000hp Supra versus Hayabusa videos out there on the WWW. I believe the necessary power to out-run such bikes is, in practise, somewhere bewteen 800-1000hp.
But once the bike fits a turbo or NOS, you're behind again.

I wasn't making comparisons with bikes. Yet alone 550 WHP bikes
My advise was to step on a racebike for a similar feeling what you can get in an 500+ hp S2.

Jees - that guy must be insane !
Respect
... no thanks I won't be riding pilion on that bike
Ultimately, for the bikes, traction and rider control are the limiting factors. Even the fastest drag bikes only have one driven wheel, not enough weight for static traction, and no downforce at high speed to impart any extra grip. There isn't room to fit more power without the machines becoming impossible to hold onto.
Contrastingly, the quickest cars in "professional" catagories (Top Fuel) have something between 6,000 and 8,000bhp, weigh less than a ton (so already exceed 6,000bhp/ton), and distribute 70% over the rear wheels in static terms. Immediately after leaving the line, this changes to about 98% on the rear wheels, and the high mounted wing generates at least 1.5 tons of downward load.
The cars will always win utimately compared to the bikes, not because of power/weight but because they can harness far more than a lightweight two wheeled machine which is much less stable. The hottest bikes clock 1/4 mile times in the 6s but the cars are in the mid 4s, and exceeding 330mph.
It's also worth noting that GP car v GP bike invariably results in a win for the car, the cornering ability and outright grip outweighs the bike's ability to corner, and the sheer acceleration of the bike is impossible to fully control, what's more the braking of the car will be done in a shorter distance for much the same reasons.
