Great - now it's just a case of the simple matter of convincing the government and the police to change their policy on speeding!!!

Speed's fine. It's the sudden deceleration when you hit something of far greater mass, resistance to motion or opposing momentum that does the damage.

If the government had their way then the country would be full of people in cars doing exctly the same speed everywhere with every electronic gadget know to man preventing them from doing anything else. But if you remove the involvement then drivers would lose all concentration and probrably crash anyway. Some may just crash as it was the only thing in a car that had any involvement, risk or fun associated with it!

My largest problem is that some of the money spent on tackling speeding could go into making road surfaces better under adverse conditions or improving street lighting or something that would make many of the poor quality roads we have to drive along inherently safer.

these speed rules were created about 50 years ago when suspensions were rubbish brakes were none existent cars couldn't go fast enough tyres were no good no safety features ,50 years on safety is so much better so now they should change the rules but they wont because this is how they rob us .

Thank you rotaryboy, I was beginning to question the friendliness of the forum members here but I suppose it was rude of me not to introduce myself.

I suppose at this point I should confess, I don't drive an S2, or any S, or even an Audi although I nearly bought an A4 earlier this year, but I have to say, after driving an S2 for the first time recently I was very impressed!!!

Mine is the Saab *ducks for cover* just visible in this shot. It's 'only' FWD but it is topping about 200hp at the moment and is a good 2 or 3 hundred kg lighter than your S2s - they seem pretty evenly matched.

Who knows, maybe I'll get an S2 later, in which case I'll see you back here then..

enjoy your speeding just watch out for those bloody gatsos mind....

Agreed. The speed limits were set when the average family car could touch 90MPH, so 70MPH was a safe speed. However, the breaking distances of a modern car can be up to 1/3 of a 1969 saloon and even less with modern supercars. The Highway Code still declares the stopping distance at 70MPH to be 96 meters, which is ludicrously long.

A sensible option would be a combination of French and German laws, with a touch of modern intelligence....

4 lane motorway (dry and good visibilityand quiet) = Unlimited for rated vehicles
3 lane motorway (dry and good visibility and quiet) = Unlimited for rated vehicles
2 lane motorway (dry and good visibility) = 80MPH for all cars/bikes

All of above when raining = 70MPH

When I say rated vehicles, I mean cars and bikes, without trailers which are considered to be safe at 3 figure speeds (i.e. have high speed rating tyres etc) Any vehicle exceeding their tyre speed rating should be done for speeding, as that IS dangerous.

The last 2 UK police commisioners have publicly agreed with proposals of this nature, stating that modern vehicles are many times safer both at speed and during an accident, so the limit should be increased to at least 80MPH. Also, it is noted that increased speeds on motorways in Germany do not increase the number of accidents.

Now all copy and past the above into a word doc, hit print and post to your local MP

                          Cheers n

are you at cambridge uni ? i've driven in germany the drivers there are so much more intelligent then the ones here when they overtake they move back over and keep the overtaking lane free even the ones who have fast cars not like the idiots we get here who hog the lanes and refuse to move over even if you flash at them no wonder there are so many accidents.

I researched at Cambridge for 11 years, but I'll not mention my subject I am now a business man who prefers driving on the continent to the UK, for the exact reasons that you mention.

It is actually the French who I find the most disciplined on multi-lane roads, even more so than the Germans. However on average, I would say that ALL of Europe has better lane discipline than the UK.....we suck
