Speed Cameras and Vehicle Movement Database

To cut the full story (link) down a bit, coming shortly to a UK near you:

    - Vehicle Movement Database holding data for two years
    - Cameras every 400 yards for monitoring and speed camera use
    - Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) all the way

Can anyone else say "big brother"?

    Ck.
Shocked, exhausted, hosed, bushed, dumped, chipped, mounted, filtered, gauged, packed, intermittantly wiped and braked. I mean broken. Now, about the car...

What next from this pitiful excuse of something called government ?

Gotta say I'm *really* glad I don't live on the mainland anymore as it continues to degenerate into a police state with a license to print money and generally invade your privacy when they feel like it... whilst simultaneously appearing to be wholly unable to crack down on organised crime.

Oh that would be just the final straw if that happens Nationwide. I guess it's also along the same lines as the "variable road toll system by satellite" they were mooting last year?

Surely if this system went live, every car in the country would be off the road within weeks as the entire population is banned from driving? Maybe that's what they want?

This sort of thing makes me really bloody cross I have to say. I'm going to write to my MP for starters. www.faxyourmp.com

Not a bad idea. If plod pulls you over you could claim that some theiving chav scum must have stolen them. Worst case scenario you get a very small fine.

But don't try and use false plates! If you get caught with them on then they will throw the book at you!

Time for revolving plates me thinks

It is funny, I have been aware of this plan for a while, working in the surveillance industry, but the strange thing is...the HA (Highways Agency) doesn't seem to know what this is

My company is part of the consortium that has just won a £47M project to provide the NRTS (National Road Telecommunications System) project for the HA. This consists of a 5Gb backbone (which can be increased to 20Gb with dense wave multiplexing) which carries all road based communications such as variable speed signs, fog detectors, emergency roadside phones and of course CCTV.

The strange thing is, the purpose of this project is to remove road control from the police. This means that it will be HA staff, not police staff (as is the current method) who will site in the control rooms watching the CCTV and controlling the signs. Therefore, it seems strange that the ACPO would be in charge of implementing a seperate national network of cameras which they would then be controlling

I have to assume that whilst this IS currently under trial (just like the Liverpool street station video system was under trial - for 2 days ) that someone (read journalist) is blowing this up a tad.

                Cheers n

                Si

P.S. If it does happen, I revert to my first comment....James Bond stylie revolving number plates, set to revolve every 15 seconds....that would confuse things.

If you set the plates to revolve every fifteen seconds, I think cameras placed every 400 yards would have a good chance of catching you twice!

                  1/4 mile in 15 sec = 60mph. 440 yards = 1/4 mile.

So... if you go over 60... you'll still be nicked!!

I suggest plates that revolve every 5 seconds!!!!

                    I agree with you Dan.

The funny thing is, by attacking motorists they are essentially reducing their main source of income when everyone gets banned from driving, i.e. Fines, road tax, Petrol, etc... So when that happens, brace yourself for massive tax increase.

                    ...Great Idea Tony!

                      In a nutshell...

it will be a lot easier and cheaper to fine the law-abiding but forgetful than it will be to deal with the hardline serial offenders
This is one of the things most wrong with our system these days - It encourages people to go outside of the law because the powers that be cannot be arsed tracking down the real criminals...

                      It's a good job MP's aren't ineffective self-serving wasters. Oh, hold on...

Read an article about traffic monitoring via the GSM network, basically somebody has come up with a system that can track all the mobile phones in each cell for approx position and speed, feed that through a fancy computer program and they can get a real time picture of how many cars are on each motorway and how fast there moving. Face it who doesn’t have a mobile these days?

What about the US talking about putting RFID tags on passports so they can be scanned as you walk past customs. Then again so could a hacker with a laptop and RFID scanner sitting somewhere logging your info as you walk past

Next they will put the damn things on your tax disk so your car gets logged at checkpoints, motorway slip roads etc. Old distance vs time calculation would catch people speeding very effectively and without your knowledge

                        Maybe i'm just paranoid

Well, here you go. As some of you know, i feel quite strongly about this and will do everything in my power to circumvent the system, which is surprisingly easy to do.
The POLIS in this country lost control of the streets in the late sixties/seventies with their own laziness/greed/graft (delete as appropriate) they were issued with "panda cars", i could think of a few alternative terms.
Suddenly, the streets were bereft of any real physical police presence, it has gone downhill since then, the streets are now lost and they will never be regained, because NO-ONE has any respect for the police, they are merely sock puppets.
The same thing is going to happen with the roads, the map is laid out before you - it is going to be a disaster.
I see vehicles regularly with "Traffic Officer" down the side of the vehicles, total w4nkers, i set a good example by making sure i go blatting past at about 90, everyone quickly gets the message and off we all go. It is a small thing but still it's subversive.
I have a friend, an Inspector no less, these are his own words: "When i retire (in 21/2 years) i'm going to stick two strategically placed bits of black insulating tape on my number plate and turn it into something else. If i get stopped (unlikely) i'm going to say Gee, i checked my vehicle last night and those weren't there, what will kids get up to these days?" I think that says it all really.
If you don't want to do this there are alternatives, like never registering the vehicle in your own name, or in the name of a relative who is no longer living who would appreciate sticking it to the government. They could always try ressurecting them from the dead in order to make the fine stick! Two can play at being a c8nt you know. The whole system relies on people following the rules, if you don't, they are screwed because they are quite simply not equipped to deal with the criminal mind, or in this case, the creative driver. If you sent the document off and it hasn't been returned - what? This is your fault? Mmm, no.
Also, it is worth bearing in mind that all gps, cellphone derived and other "sattelite" speeds are vector speeds and not always a true reflection of your actual road speed. This reading needs to be taken between two points on an arrow straight road, something we seem to have lost the ability to build.
I can assure you, i WILL circumvent all black box in the cockpit technology for as long as i possibly can, and that will be a long time. Why do you think that loads of people are sticking german looking numbers on their cars in London? That'll be the congestion charge. Which brings me to my next point, do you know who actually manages the congestion charge? Well boys and girls, that'll be the same company who collect all the TV licence revenue, the same organisation whose MD awarded himself an ELEVEN MILLION pound bonus last year. Do you know where your TV licence money goes? because i do!
Can anyone expect me to hold a bunch of thieving lying scum in any sort of regard? They only regard they get from me is that of distaste. I don't care for them either. It is a tradgedy that the Police force have been reduced to the role of sock puppets and in my, and others, minds the government have been waging a steady campaign of discredit against the Police. I am convinced that it is because the government is going to be unable to meet it's financial obligations with regard to pensions and public service personnel are going to be shafted. (along with the rest of us it seems).

                              graham.
