    Strange noises??????

    Hi guys,

Been out for a run in the fog today and I have noticed a few new noises, any pointers as to what they may be.

    1. A high pitched noise always at the same volume and pitch that seems to be coming from inside the car as I cannot hear it outside of it. (Heater fan????)

    2. A real deep gritty grinding noise, only happens occasionally but sounds to be coming from by the handbrake lever?????????? Sounds really grindy too, metal on metal almost. I know it is not the brakes as it happens when moving and I replaced the pads and discs all round in oct.

Also the engine sounds really tappy and when cold (ice cold) i get a belt slip noise on acceleration and slow down (foot on the clutch)

Any pointers would be much appreciated as the car is starting to cost a fair bit of money and before I tinker I want everything to be right so there is less chance of foul ups or more costly repairs.

    Cheers Boys and Girls.

I hope you are all having fun in the fog!!!!!!

Yup, I get this one in the fog. If you listen carefully you will here that rather than a constant sound, it actually sounds more like "SLOW DOWN YOU MADE *******!!"

This is easily cured by either the liberal application of an alcohol based solvent (I suggest vodka and orange), or simply leave the wife at home when you head out for a thrash

Yup, I get this one as well. You correctly identified the area involved and yes, it does happen at speed. It is usually caused by over use of the handbrake for 180 degree turns on ice covered carparks. Try left foot braking to get the back end out, then use the accelerator to keep the sideways motion going.

Maybe worth checking that the prop bearing is properly greased, if you haven't done so recently.

As per noise no.1 - I get that one too sometimes (or perhaps it's there all the time, just usually drowned out by the radio). I comes from under the rear seat - I had a look under there while disconnecting the servotronics and there's some litte motor. Not sure what it does, but I figured it's probably not overly important (and now I'm waiting for a 'thats the fuel pump you dumb ****' reply) perhaps it's for the rear washer? Unless it gets annoyingly loud, or dies, I'll probably wait and find out...

            cheers

PS Whats a 'tappety noise'? Is it the same as the funny noise a car engine makes when it's very low on oil, before that big 'clunk' that occurs before the revs drop to zero and your reactions at dipping the clutch to avoid imminent lockup @ 70 are tested? (learned this one this summer at 3am on the I-15 in a Suzuki Samauri )

              Okay

YEp got rid of the tappety noise (Dry as a nuns crotch) it was the oil. Dunno where that has gone though as it was only serviced 8wks ago??????????

Noise Number 1 I'm guessing now but def coming from infront of me like a bearing noise.

Noise 2 still happening, point me in the direction of a prop bearing and the grease monkey will get to work. Cheers

Cheers HP you really know how to put a smile on one side of my face and a red hand mark on the other. Guess she won't be coming with me in the car again, I wonder if hitting dense fog wall at warp 1 on a B road had anything to do with it??????

Right got noise 1 figured. It is the heater fan, it happens when the fan is on and I go round corners/hit a bump/have the fan running at 2 or above.

Anyone got a spare one or should I get a new one? Oh oh oh can they be refurbed or fixed???

After my car was left for about six months, it too was making a noise from the heater, under the same conditions as you describe, only when the fan was under load.
The first time it made the noise it scared the life out of me. It sounded like a screaming banshee! After a few months it gradually got better, by slowly sounding more like a mooing cow. Now the problem seems to have gone away all together.
