    Do I need a 2nd mortgage?

Need some advice guys/gals... I'm possibly starting a new job which will mean travelling 100 mile round trip 5 times weekly? Should I take a loan out to cover my fuel costs or get a cheap/nasty diesel and use S2 at weekends?

One of the reasons why I bought a second car 9 years ago was travelling 80 miles a day to work.

Buy a cheap runaround - I bought a Coupe GT. Made life easy.

70 miles a day in the S6, uses a tank and a bit a week. And every mile a fun one!!!

i bought my S2 when i was doing a 105mile round trip and wasted literally £££thousands on fuel - great for points but to be honest a cheap runabout would have been much more sensible. Plus driving a car like an S2 in stop start traffic is no fun, it creates engine heat like you wouldnt believe and isn't a brilliant car to nudge along with its heavy clutch too. I'm commuting by train these days and only get to drive my car at weekends and its far more rewarding. Get a tinpot heap to drive during the week and to load the miles on and with the money saved get your s2 mint and mod'd and enjoy for what it is built for.....

Hmm... I travel 22miles per day, 4-5 days per week and that's enough for me! Just do the sums for approx 2,000 miles per month:

            2000/25mpg = 80x4.54 = 363.2l @ 95p = £345
            2000/55mpg = 36x4.54 = 165.1l @ 95p = £157
saving = £188/mo in fuel alone.

Or you can look at like this: you would be paying £135/mo less tax into the coffers of your already heavily taxed income, given the uber-high fuel taxes...

I bought a second car about 3 months after I got my S2 and was doing 85 miles a day. The petrol costs will cripple you. You can run another car on the petrol savings alone almost. Not only that you will enjoy your S2 more when you do drive it, keep the miles off it maknig it depreciate less and have to service and maintain it less too.....

              You know it makes sense...

              Cheers,

              Steve.

I use my other half's car to get to work, apart from the "Friday Club"
I won't be doing another Friday this year
I hate driving the S2 when your surrounded by half asleep people in a rush to get to somewhere they don't really want to be - work.
Then you have the car-park challenge - can some numpty not manage to bump / scrape your "old Audi" in the works car park.
Followed by the home run, where they are all tired and have one objective to return home in the quickest time ever, even though they can't drive for toffee!
Mix in a few hundred cars and a crap road system that can't cope and my choice is not to bother and let her drive.
                Evenings and weekends for me
Woodhead Pass with a nice return down the Snake Pass anyone?

I thought about a 2nd car but if i did that i'd end up selling the S2 which is looking more likely to be honest.

When i was doing 70mile round trips every day, this is what i done too, i bought a Mk2 Golf Turbo Diesel for £500, i kept track of my mileage and amount of diesel used and i was getting ~55mpg average consistantly, never less than 45mpg tho.

Put another way, it was £10 a day in the S2 (driving like a total saint!) or a couple of quid each day in the diesel Golf.

Also as was said, i def appreciated the drive of the S2 a lot more from this as well and it saved me a fortune!!! The Mk2 Diesel Golf's are still about and cheap to pick up, as are Mk3 Golf Diesels now as well. I'd def go that route if you will be doing that kind of mileage, my only regret was not doing it sooner!

I am unfortunately, i've casually been looking at some alternative motors but can't see anything that appeals.

What stopped me so far is the mrs has told me she'd kill me if i did as she likes it too much even though it scares the cr*p out of her when i drive quick!

When I was still running Kitty (it's been a while...) my 50 mile round trip amounted to about £12 per day of fuel. Prices were a little less then but all being well a decent remap will aid in keeping a cap on that!

Anyway now I run Mavis (the Micra) at more than twice the mpg and with cheaper fuel, and reliably I might add! Mavis cost less than a month and a half of Kitty fuel to buy - so she has already paid for herself!

Nevertheless, I want my baby back!!!

I just bought C2 1.4 turbo diesel for every day use ( at least 70 miles a day)-65mpg.

To use it for commuting its perfect
