Right here goes what are the pro and cons of the 2 engines ABY & 3B

S2 engines, ABY and 3B alike are very strong and reliable if they have been cared for... Some of the cars here are very close to their 15th birthday.
But they are a bit complicated when something goes wrong :mischeif:
So as long as you're wallet's not too thin and with the help of the forum ( forget the dealerships, they think the S2 is a sporty A2 ), you'll always be on your way

There's not much to choose between the two engine types. I personally prefer the ABY 'cos of the overboost mode and the newer technology direct ignition system. The only drawback is that the coilpacks on the ABY are all getting a bit tired now. Reckon on £250-£300 in parts to renew the coil packs every 120k miles (ish).

Of course a 3B can have its ECU remapped to the same performance levels as the ABY - cos they run the same turbo and engine internals.

I dislike the 3B engine purely cos of the reliance on a mechanical distributor - which is a real bitch to get at as well.

3B's also have the 5 speed 01A 'box which aint as strong as the 6-cogged 01E. However not everyone likes the shift mechanism on the 01E as it won't be hurried. many folk have fitted aftermarket quickshift kits to the 01E.

Something most people don't spot until driving ABY and 3B back-to-back is that the engines have a different character. The 3B is a bit more raucous and free-revving cos of the lighter flywheel that it carries. The ABY feels smoother and more refined because of its dual-mass flywheel technology which is now de-rigeur on most manual gearboxed Audis of today.

One proper advantage the 3B has is age - for two reasons. Firstly they are a bit cheaper - don't be afraid of high miles if the car has been cared for. Secondly, they can legally have the CAT's removed which improves the sound department no end - and releases some more power into the bargain.

On balance I prefer the ABY, but don't turn down a good 3B if you find one !

200k and no running issues here.

the only downside i would point out is the £400 power steering pump. Offcourse if u dig deep enough u will find one prob half price.
