Sorry i forgot to say the fuction i wish to achieve.
I wish to enter any number into a certain cell and then some where else on the worksheet it will populate the cell from 1 to that number.
    eg
i put the number 3 in cell H1 and from cell B5 it populates downwards 1,2,3 down the column.
Please if anyone has any ideas i will try it, god knows ive tried everything else!
    Question/Rant over

try looking at this file and the formulas in it. I think it is what you are looking for

          across H1 thro to K1 I have keyed in 10, 20, 30 and 40 respectively.

in the columns B, C, D and E, I have replicated the formula for subtraction from the top number, i.e. B5=E1, B6=E1-1, B7=B6-1 etc

          you'll see anyway

let me kow if it is not what you were looking for

Nah - I think this what is asked for. Dead easy - I've just allowed up to 100 for now.

Paul your a star! How simple when you know how! I'm using for a simple calculator for when the best time to make a pit stop is depending on fuel consuption per lap, number of laps, etc.
              Thankyou

No worries - I can hold my own with Excel - Just don't ask me about pivot tables...

Make sure and do this with fuel measurements by weight if you are doing this for the real world - its much easier to manage than volume. Apologies if you know this already.

I did do it by weight, now it's just debugging the calculations, is there a way to do an if test for only if it's true will it do a function if it's false do nothing, not just put " ". cos on some i keep getting circular refrences or it's trying add " " to a value. Regards Michael.

It's ok i seemed to have solved the problem, just instead of putting " ", i put 0 seems to work. Doesnt look as neat but well i can tidy it up this only to data sheet, i can refrence all the important figures later.
                    Once again Thanks

I am using Excel daily for all sorts of functions - but if you are struggling to get it to show a tidy cell for null values, you can always set up a conditional format so that values of more than 0 are shown with black writing on a white background (or whatever colours suit) and all zero values are shown with the same colour for text and background (so they are invisible).
