I thought the IM and head on ST looked very similar to that used on the S/V40's?

My mistake. The 2.5 20V IL5 in the Focus is a Volvo unit, software is Fords though.

My bro just went to the dark side and got him self and 850 R, goes like stink, not as quick as mine (was!) though, stupide front wheel drive lets it down so badly! IT spins it's wheels into third on a reasonably dry road!
It very confortable once your going but i wouldnt recomend throwing it around the back lanes!
The audi still has it though even though were both putting out 280hp, his just doesnt have the pick up!
          So audi still wins

            No it isnt
Its used in the Volvo, but it is a Mazda design start to finish.

Its a 5 cylinder Duratech engine

Sure it's not a T5 badged as an R because the R's are 4WD. Still great cars though. My boss has a MY03 S60 R (300 BHP) and it goes really well and handles even better! One of the best handling cars I have driven.

Still not got the German four rings though!!

Nah started life as a GLT, though now 280hp, guy before put on all the R bits. THought they were available as an R in just FWD, i'm sure the awd came in later on the V70's?
No worry dont really want to talk about the box!
And no it ceratainly doesnt have the four rings!

On Top Gear, Clarkson did say the Focus 5 cylinder is exactly the same as that used in the Volvo. A friend of mine is a Ford technician, he says there are Volvo part numbers and logos on the components, apart from the intake manifold, exhaust manifold and engine covers.

He also says the ECU is Fords own, nothing like the Volvo one at all. He still owns a Volvo V70 T5 from when he worked at Lex Volvo, so I guess he should know.

I said it was used in the Volvo.....not designed by them

The implication was that it was a Volvo designed engine and therefore possibly a development of the Audi 5 and its not.

It was part of a Family designed by Mazda who are also part of Ford
its official designation was always I5 and I4 and beleive it or not there was an I3 version too.
The engines Public name is Duratec .....Designed by Mazda, Built in Dearborn, Mexico or Valencia, derivatives are fitted in Focus, Mondeo, Mazda, Volvo, F150 Ranger Truck and lots more besides

It will have Volvo part numbers and markings on the castings, just as the landrover and Jaguar engines have their respective logos on vehicle fit parts.
And why a Peugeot/Citroen V6 diesel has ford/Jaguar/Landrover casting marks

But then up against Clarkson and a Ford Technician....... what would an engine designer know
After all I only did the in process and Plant layout drawings for making it and its 4 cylinder sisters
And did the installation of the 4 cylinder 2.3 version into the Caterham CSR for Cosworth

They can all go down the same machining and assembly line...... Its a Focus/Mondeo Duratec with another Pot on the end, regardless of what name is on the bits, it is not a development of the Audi/Volvo 5 cylinder

                          fokus and 5 pot volvoengine

the NEW focus have the volvo 5 pot engine in the bay,but it is a volvo engine, like 4 syl in v40 ,5pot in v50,and 6pot in 960 ,but i've heard that the audi/vw had to be asked for advice when making thevolvoengine, the bore are 81,00mm and 83,00 in the volvo, that was strange, audi does have the same too and the bottom of the chassi are the same as volvo v50/s50 i think or was it the 40 and they have the same bottom as the carisma too.....
they HAVE put in the 5,4 v8 from ford in focus too, with the man tranny, and rear end from ford mustang it will fit in.
