Thanks guys, it's apparently Grey Pearl Effect (well that's what VAG call it - they mean grey metallic...)

Fat Boy, you are so right! Something I intend to sort - along with Diadem or LED for the front indicators to get rid of the fried egg look.

First, the 400bhp (hopefully!) tune up needs sorting, along with Porky calipers, new tyres, new mirror (yep, one got broken by a bus), new fogs and a bit of crack repair on the bumper (amazing what a moor hen can do!)

Then there's the suspension, a bit of diet work (maybe some lighter seats) and numerous other little tasks!!!
