    S2 performance

Looks like Ive found the right place!
Basically I grew up with Audis, my dad brought 3 in a row brand new and has always said they were the best cars he ever brought.... a Y (I think) reg 80 CL, D reg 80 Sport, and an F reg 80 Quattro.
Ive now decided I need to follow in his footsteps and am after an S2 estate (Avant?)
I currently have a rather rare Cavalier Turbo 4x4 which is running 274bhp, 0-60 ~5.5secs, 150+mph... Im basically wondering/worrying if the S2 is going to be as good performance wise.
To hopefully make it easier for some comparisons, I used to have a Stage 1 (280bhp) Sapphire Cosworth 4x4, the Cavalier is quicker than that, so can anyone compare the S2 to a Cossie?

    Any help is most welcome

And a final one to hopefully save a bit of time, can anyone recommend some good S2 estates in the members cars bits to look at? Im finding it damn hard to find pics of S2's that are not standard!

    cossie

Hi there fella i have a s2 aby a lot of the guys i pal around up here have cossies, escort, saph 2wd, my good friends saph 2wd cossie was standard and i could pulll away from him all day then he got it chipped stage one it was a bit closer but nothing in it i still pulled away when we got up into the higher speeds

Plus lets face it you need a pack of head gaskets like playing cards to keep the cossie going since the engine is pretty highly strung and that quote is from a cossie owner based on fact

p.s my car was only decated at the time

Its all in the Torque, compare Cosworth Torque values to an S2, there is people on here who for £1200 have turned a standard S2 in to Porsche Munchers, with 4x4 torsen drivetrain, they a pretty under estimated cars. 4 of us last year went from the North east to chester at daft o clock in the morning to a garage meet and showed a 2003 Carrera 4 a clean set of heels on the private link road thingy . Besides that i have never been in a cossie which doesnt rattle and squeek. At any speed the S2 is relatively quiet and refined whether your doing 40 or 140.

        That sounds pretty promising then!
Am I right in thinking the 6 speed box is the one to go for?
How much work/cost is involved to get it to run ~300bhp and how reliable is the engine/tranmission/box at that sort of power?
Sorry for all the questions, but Im sure there will be more

All avants have a 6 speed box as they all have the ABY engine. The engine and transmission can handle 300bhp with ease.

Does it cost much to get that sort of power or is it just a case of a chip, turn up the boost, air filter/exhaust?

280 HP is said to be the general limit of the Exhaust manifold, thats first in the line and the turbo wont give much more than that, so you go RS2 Exhaust Manifold, Turbo, Injectors, Intercooler and a Re-Map and 380HP is achievable with Oodles of Torque.

Oh and cost---Probably in the region of £1200-£1500 for the bits if you do some e-bay hunting and buying, i am sure some of the (Many) people who have upgraded will help you with costings and accurate figures. A Major thing to consider before performance upgrades is Brakes, they are the S2 achillies heel, they are b*llocks from standard but you can fit Porsche Mono block 4 pot setups fairly easily with some 320'ish by 32mm discs and it'll stop like its hit a wall, for this setup some people have done the brakes for £250 - £700, once again e-bay, also some breakers who come across alot of them from porsches wrote off, do a few searches in the brakes section and i am sure you will find a thousand posts on different brake setups, costs, and most importantly performance.

I put a RS2 blower on a stock ABY and extracted 330bhp + 350 lbs ft out of my old MY95 Avant. It never gave me any problems bar lag up to 4k and is still running ok i belive now 3 years later with "James S2".

I wouldn't consider going for more power without the porsche break upgrade... was fitted when I bought my car, but I've seen stock brakes on fire after 6 laps at Castle Coombe... my 996's didn't even fade

As per power, I think a good remap with an exhuast + intake should be worth 275-290hp. That should give you mid-5's on the 0-60 time.

Or with a few spare £££'s you could go for the RS2 conversion and make 380bhp

****, brakes yeah very good idea........ next on my shopping list, lol!!
seeing as i cooked a set of EBC red stuff pads on a quick blast down a good B-road

what makes it worse was that i was chasing a mate in an A6 2.5 TD (red) I avant quattro, didn't even warm his brakes up (don't think he used them actually)
