Worn box's can be hard to get into 1st and 2nd when cold, and sometimes when you stop all the gears are out of sync and it wont go into either. Just go into 3rd or 4th and then it should go into 1st no problem.

There is one T-junction near me that has a speed ramp right at the junction so when you stop the front wheels are on the top of the ramp. Never ever ever has it gone into 1st gear at that junction, i have to go into 2nd, then into 1st

you could even try some thinner box oil plus some molyslip.mine crunches into 3rd at high revs and gears were stiff.doing the above helped.

i have a fully rebuilt box and it does this on very cold mornings from start, after a couple of changes its fine. Also fine in the summer first thing in the morning, sure its something to do with the coldness rather than being worn.

I was thinking similar, mine seems fine, no crunching, but on cold mornings its a bit more notchy and requires a bit more force at first, once on the move and things have warmed up a bit things seem fine.

I only ever notice this on v cold mornings, otherwise its fine.

Sounds familiar. The A3 box is really hard work when cold. It's just the oil being a bit thicker.

Same here - my box is much smoother once there's a bit of temperature, but still maintain's a bit of 'notchiness' which I like

I remember -25C starts in good 'ole Canada... now there's a stiff box for ya - feels it's full of molasses

I've got Red Line MT90 oil in the gearbox on mine, no probs selecting gears in the coldest of weather.
Could be worth trying for those with probs.

i had this this turned out to be the clutch needing ajusting but that was how mine went away. The clutch pedal was sticking half way down and not coming up see if yours comes up more than the level it sits at..

I have to echo the comments. Mine is ok once it has warmed up. 1st and 2nd can be a problem though, and if you are gunning it 2 and 3rd are hard to get into
