    Second car suggestions please

A potential change in circumstances means I may have to rethink what I use as a daily/commuter car.

The per year mileage would increase from c. 8000 to c. 25000 - which in an S2 hurts the pocket a lot.

Happily this doesn't necessarily mean that I'll be getting rid of the S2 - just that something else to use on a daily basis will need to appear - something that (net) means I am not spending quite so much.

Clearly if the S2 becomes a genuine low mileage second car, there are savings on (e.g.) insurance to be had by changing it to a limited mileage policy.

So: what do people suggest as a daily/commuter/etc car?

    Cheers

    Ck.

RS 6's are quite practical I reckon

seriously though...what sort of budget? that has quite an impact on what car people will advise you to buy!!

I think this kind of thing would be ideal. Cheap, economical and still has the aircon etc....

Ok... if I run the S2 for 25000 miles that's gonna cost (petrol alone - roughly) 25000/25 (mpg) = 1000 gallons = 4500 litres @ 92p/l = £4100. By reducing the mileage to a max of 5000 on the S2 that is reduced to c. £820 - a saving of c. £3500. Say I can half the fuel cost (or double the mpg figure) by getting something else, that's then £1750 left. Since it doesn't have to leave me up within the first year - say that I'm breaking even at the end of two years - that gives us a maximum of £3500 to purchase... but cheaper is better

I know the above is full of holes and assumptions. Gotta start somewhere tho.

The other alternative is to sell the S2. Noooooooooooooooooooo

Good suggestion - kinda thing that was slowly (very slowly this morning) coming to mind.

I have a MK2 golf 16v and it is a hoot, although I am only getting 27 - 30 mpg..... An 8v might be bit more frugal. They are cheap to buy, run and insure though...

          Cheers,

          Steve.

Get an audi 80 1.9 tdi. if you drive it on the speed limits you can get it lower than 6l/100mm, and if you push it you cant get it to 7.

                I bought last week a Citroen C4 vtr coupe with a 1.6hdi 110hp...

Just want to say one thing:

Buy a car that be in the level of a car like S2, or else, you will always want to drive the Petrol car... This is happening to me... C4 is a good car but.. audi is audi.

Ps. No, i didn't sell my S4 she is in the workshop to make some modifications.

I would disagree with that. Get a worse car so that when you get back in the S2 it feels like a spaceship built by the most talented engineers in the galaxy!

                  (Mine does )

I've been thinking of a 1980-1981 W123 240D or 300D from Merc actually. They've just turned 25 years old which means they're "oldtimers" as far as Belgian road laws are concerned so it's about 75 Euros a year to insure and about 25-30 Euros road tax.
I know they're old tanks but that's the point... they're tanks. Good diesel mpg ( something like 9-10 liters/100km ), bullet proof engine , bullet proof car and a great looking interior with chrome and such. In a word, a real Merc.

But they are very dated and you see them on the news in Angola, Afghanistan and other exotic locations so they're not very classy

But I'm still seriously considering one, just as a commuter though, just as a commuter !

Why not buy a more modern car with a TDI engine then?

I can't do what you guys do, i get frustrated driving non turbo cars with piddly torque levels.

                              I'd rather catch a bus!
