just test drove an S2 - advice please!

Hi,

I just went and test drove an M reg S2 this afternoon. Absolutely love the car and from a purely asthetic point of view its in great condition. As far as i could see the only problems with it were:

1) Brakes - apparently as it hadn't really been used for the last 4-6 weeks there is some rust on the discs, making braking a little 'crunchy'
2) Engine idle - the revs go up and down a little when idling, not sure if this is a problem or not

apart from that everything looks pretty good, any advice on the above, or what i ought to look for if I go back and potentially buy it?

Brakes should have cleaned up after a few miles and should feel smooth. If in doubt, drive it further. Standard S2 brakes are a little weak and do require quite a lot of pedal pressure to get working hard.

Idle could be due to the Idle Stabilisation Valve being dirty. Mine does the same on occasion. A good clean with a suitable solution such as carb cleaner should sort it. However, the failure of other sensors can cause the similar symptoms so the best option is the get the ECU read for fault codes just to make sure.

Private or trade sale. Can I bee so cheeky as to ask what and how much? (Just out of interest obviously!)

ya on my 90 i cleaned the isv and the throttle body and took her out tday and alot better.good luck if you get one.

its a trade sale, he's asking £5999...think i can prob squeeze a little lower than that (I hope)...

the guy selling it is an S2 enthusiast (he owns 2, had them there at the garage) and reckoned this one was in better condition than his...

first time i've driven one and only went out for 5 minutes, but just love the thing (am looking at a small loan right now to get it)

i'm based in london, but the car is up near birmingham. Thinking i'm going to go back on saturday and take another look (and following advice from a mechanic friend take a closer look at a few things...)

Just as a general point, I have very little experience with performing maintenance on my own cars, considering this, is it a little ambitious to take on an 11 year old S2 or can I (with a little help) pick up most things as I go along?
