    Hi All,

I posted a while back about purchasing an RS2 and got some great advice.

Now I have had time to mull the situtaion over I have decided to go for an RS2 at the end of this year.

I am just doing a bit of homework at the moment, I realise I will have to pay 12k upwards for a hlaf decent LHD or RHD RS2, but something a freind of mine said to me (who works at porschse) said today really made me think......

He explained parts where extremely expensive and quite a few things can go wrong with the RS2??? Is this correct???

He recommended putting aside 1k or so to be prepared for repairs, I was just wondering as to what is a good mileage is for an RS2 purchase i.e avoiding any expensive services or major maintence work? and also a good source for parts which I may need so I can browse the prices - brake pads, oil filters, wheel bearings, etc etc.

Advice would be much appreciated on this so that I do not end up bankrupt!

    Many Thanks
    Matt

On the face of it, yes, to set aside a £K is a lot. However any high perfomance car whether it be Porsche/Lotus/TVR/Jap/ or indeed an S/RS2 its not going to necessarily be cheap when bits need doing.

Regards as to what car to actually go for, well thats actaully the million dollar question.

The trade off is whether you get a higher mileage enthusiast owned one, that has had money spent on it, or whether you go for a lower mileage one that may need things changing in the not too distant.........

My first RS2 had mileage near 160 thou, and I spent a fair few quid rebuilding the head, rebuilt turbo, overhauled brakes, new suspension bushes/shockers/exhaust/clutch. It sold to the current owner with near 180 thou and is now nudging 200.........

My current one has had main dealer work carried out, but has not had the amount of work my previous one had. It is just about to go over 90k

It is worth setting aside the money since sometimes problems will crop up, however my s2 coupe has had quite a bit spent on it, mostly out of choice but a few problems were sorted.

The typical problems are boost leaks, brake bomb, wishbone bushes, suspension top mounts and coil packs on high milers. (130K+)

The coils normally need changing after this if it is tuned, wishbone bushes can be replaced with OE or poly's at a reasonable cost. Top mounts can be uprated or replaced with OE's which are about £40 a pair.

Boost leaks can be difficult to find and if you dont DIY it can be an expensive diagnosis, but changing to samco's (available through the forum) resolves alot of problems and cost about £200.

Then it is just running costs such as tyres, pads, alignment etc.

Oil filter is the same as an audi 80 so cheap as chips, choice of oil is upto you.

for comparision on parts check out ECP, Vagparts, The local stealer and GSF
