    1995 ABY Coupe Aircon Question....

    Hi Guys,

Need to get my aircon going again.. all in complete working order but no cold air.. does the system just need re-gassed? If so, who can do this? I have been told refrigeration engineers can do it? Help!!

Any half decent garage will do it for you.
What about Autovolks. I've not used them, but they're supposed to specialise in VAG cars.

Been once to ask about about my MAF. It was faulty (which I knew) and asked them to find any faults.. they couldn't find any and said car running fine, which was rubbish. Won't be going back. Also, don't wanna get fleeced so gonna shop around. Cheers though..

Harper & Hebson did mine when they had the Audi dealership down on Viaduct Estate. They couldn't help fix a boost leak though (suggested I replace the wastegate!).

They replaced one holed pipe and regassed it for me. The gassing was free as they'd cocked up on a few other things they were doing. It should have cost £80.

This was a few years back though. I wouldn't recommend them for S2 work though. They only have one guy who knows S2s and he doesn't know them that well!

A lot of Audi main dealers will not work on the earlier type air con systems as they use a different gas to the more modern cars....So you might find a local independent specialist is more help.

I had a local air conditioning engineer check over my car. Initially I thought I needed gas - but it turned out that one of the electrical connections wasnt joined. It was tricky to find becuase the connection was encased in a plastic surround.

Dont know if its a common fault, but may be worth double checking all the electrical connections in case its that simple. The system made all the right noises even when it wasnt working.

Good luck with sorting it out.

@Neebover - there are some in the Forum who believe the S2Aircon system to be the spawn of satan - it adds 18kg of weight all in front of the front axle, it of course saps a bit of power, increases fuel consumption, increases the heat soak in the engine bay and worsens the amount of restricted access it causes across the engine with all the extra components. However, these same air-con haters are also the same people who enjoy sitting in hot cars whilst swimimng in pools of their on sweat

However, if like me, you rather enjoy sitting remaining nice and cool in a black leather interior during the whole year, and also enjoy its demisting powers, you'll want to get your aircon back up and running!

There are a few real weak spots with the S2 aircon. The main one is the compressor - the compressor seals fail and leak over time due to heat soak.

Find yourself a specialist aircon reconditioning company - there are many. Some do "mobile services" and will come out to your car to do it. Get them to do a leak test to detect if, and where, the coolant is coming from. I'm not exactly sure, it depends on the date of manufacture, but you might have the older R12 refrigerant, which is no longer used. If you have that, you'll need to get the system converted to R134a, which again adds to the cost. (the newer stuff doesn't kill the ozone layer).

You may have to invest a fair amount of cash in it, but you also might be lucky. I spent the best part of £700 last year getting my aircon back up and running after my compressor failed, but boy is it worth it. Even today, in the April sunshine, the aircon was needed and enjoyed.

I agree, aircon rocks Nice write up Dan
You should have none of the probs with the older gas Chris, 95 S2's have R134a running in them.

Off topic; get yourself down to Croft race circuit on Sat, a few of us will be there.

Thanks Dan, that's answered a lot of questions on our S2, I've just checked our 93 avant and it takes R134a, the same as our 2002 A4..........

So the Audi dealer that said they couldn't re-gas it never even tried!
