Mate, Zen are doing good hosting ATM, www.zen.co.uk, I host about 5 sites with them and they are offering first month for only 1p, with a one month minimum contract, they also support MySQL, SMTP, PGP and all the other usual stuff.
There cPanell is also very easy to use for managing parked domains, databases and POP3 accounts.
also their customer serive is very very good.
10/10 for them from me

The question is, do you want to own a domain (i.e. wvw.mydomain.com) for full public access or do you just want to host some private pages? If the second, the just use the space provided by you ISP (i.e. wvw.btinternet.com/myname.com) as that will not cost you anything.Originally posted by stevieyidIm with bt and yeah i have broadband. How do i go about creating the web site for him on my web space? Cheers mate
I own may domains and they typically cost around £10 per year to register and around the same again to host. I use 34sp.com for hosting as they were a good UK based company when I switched away from US hosting some 5 years ago.
Once you have decided what you want (based on what you want to use it for) then if you cannot code (PHP, JS, HTML, etc) then get yourself a good WYSIWYG (What You See I What You Get) application. They range from loads of free ones like Arachnophillia or MS Frontpage lite through to the daddy - Dreamweaver.
Then read the help files and get practicing. Any monkey can code a simple webpage within a hour of starting. The other easy way to learn is to surf. Find parts of pages that you like, right click and select 'view source'. A notepad page will open with the code in it. (don't choose complicated pages as their code will be in JS or PHP etc and will not be displayed). Then read through the text (most will be alien at first) and find the words as displayed on the page. Then cut and past the entire section (usually everything between the <TABLE> and </TABLE> tags) into your page. You can then edit it down and change the text to your requirements.
The main reason for 'borrowing' others code is to teach yourself HTML. You will also need to 'borrow' their style sheets as well. These are a seperate file which tell the browser window what colours, fonts etc you use for each diplyed text group and are a .CSS file. It will be named towards the top of the text file you just opened. When you find it, copy the full path into the browser window you opened to their site, after the site address(i.e. wvw.goodsite.com/style.css) to download it.
Now go to your ISP or domain host and read how to ftp to your filespace and there, job done, you have gone from virgin to full fledged code borrower in a matter of a few hours.....so why did it take me much longer to learn?

Hi mate
oI own over 100 of domain names and a few sites too :mischeif:
I reccomned you buy the domain name through http://www.123-reg.co.uk as they are without doubt the best for domain names and if you want easy hosting go through them. You also get an "auto" site builder tool for basic users making it **** easy for novices to build a site
or// for what you are needing (ie// not a dedicated server) you could go to http://www.ukhost4u.com
they are cheap and you get a great control panel and reliable hosting / email
my advice is DONT go for really cheap hosting as your site will ALWAYS be down.
and I do have experience in this!!! YOu get what you pay for to an extent and the people who say £1 per month or whatever host 500+ sites on each server which inevtably means a lot of downtime.
If you want to make your own site search for "html tutorials" on google and download and trial dreamweaver mx form http://www.macromedia.com (do all the turorials from its help menu b4 trying to use it!!)
(not knocking anyones suggestions on this thread!)Comment

I came across this hosting company that seems a good deal on the unlimited plan if you're planning hosting quite a bit of info and need bandwidth, also supports MySQL and have other handy parts like a webpage wizard etc.
I was looking at this one or similar to host large numbers of high res pics (3mb+ each) but for now have chosed to just abuse photobucket until i have more of a site to put up.
The also offer a 3 month trial totally free to use it and can then say no thanks or choose a planAnt

NONONONONO
DO NOT USE STREAMLINE NET ANT!!!!!!
They are terrible. BTDT. Nitemare. Search google for "streamlinenet" reviews.
The only good ones are fake ones they did themselves
The abd ones are the truth. No joke. They are the biggest sham outfit I have ever dealt with.
And they are thieves and continue to take your money even when youve cancelled and told them never to charge you againComment

Getting back to the original question, if you want to dabble at making your ownsite before comitting to any hosting goto the BT broadband site and they will give you details of FTP access for your chosen progam. E.g. front page which is nice and simple for beginners.
BT may have an online WYSIYG editor for building site on there area.
Once you have your site built and uploaded you can tweak it and then decide if you want your own domain name for it.Greg

Hmmm I have streamline, and have not had any problems, email has been fine including web access, the site seems to be available at all times and runs reasonably quickly.
Still playing with it, cheating a bit by creating pages with google page creator and then moving them, this is the first page that I've done. I'm sure the wife will thank me for posting the link

mmm. Where do I start.
i will say though if you are only using them for personal non business web pages and the occasional email they "may" do for you ...BUT
I made the mistake of choosing them for web hosting at the company I work for currently (now moved hosts: tho to decent corporate one..."rackspace") ) and to cut a loooong story short.
they
1// refuse to accept they have a problem even when your site is down and all their stuff is plainly broken (and for other hostees)
They once said "it may be the weather affecting the telecomm cables
)
2// Are totally useless in relation to any technical query and have no tech knowledge
3// WOrk out of a small outbuilding in their own home!! (just try and get to visit the [prremises!!! it cant and wont happen as they have no proper address)
4// There telephone line is PERMANENTLY OFF!!!! on answerphone. and has never worked or my messages responded to.
(imagine that when your corporate email is down
)
5// They refuse to transfer domins out and have to be forced by internic or Nominet + carry on billing you when youve left unless you ban your credit card compnay form paying out to them
6//There servers are POS and are actually owned by another company. All streamline do is rent them and then host 400 sites off each one. and do loads of google ads to get people in (it works too)
7// The "control panel" they offer is the most useless junk heap POS I have ever seen and is an embaressment to web programmers!!!!!
Im bored now but you get the drift.....
