    Amazing Locost autocross vid!

    Absolute skills!

Does he have syncomesh on his Reverse gear, because he seems to be able to go from fwd to reverse very very easily (without any grinding)! Almost as if hes not even using reverse?!

Autocross is actually the American version, usually a course marked out with plastic cones only going forwards. This is known as Autotests or Test Trials, main difference is you go forwards and backwards, handbrake turns, nose throws, and garages you have to drive into. Basically you complete the course in the quickest time possible, every pylon you clip or line fault you get (if you don’t fully enter a garage or line) you receive a 5 second penalty. My old man has done it for over 30 years, spent much of my childhood marshalling and time keeping these events here in Ireland. Its a LOT of fun ;-)

No syncro on reverse, if the driven wheels aren’t moving you don’t have a problem, with a RWD car you lock up the back with the handbrake when selecting reverse, with a fwd car you use the brakes to lock the front up. I learnt to drive when i was about 10 in my my dads autotest prepared Mini cooper and it was very easy to do, just stamp on the middle pedal when sliding to a stop, you actually select reverse and clutch out while still sliding forwards, then apply power to spin the wheels in reverse, the more power you apply the quicker you decelerate and change direction. The difficult part is judging it just right so you stop moving forwards and change direction exact ally where you want. For example you might have a line marked on the road where you have to cross the line going forwards with both front wheels but not the rears, and then reverse off the line again. The good guys will use this technique and only cross the line by an inch, and never actually stop

In the good old days it was very cheap, buy a Mini and fit a set of shocks and away you go, as you improve you add disk brakes, bigger engines for torque, lower final drive ratio etc etc. These days people are spending 10k+ to prepare cars so to be competitive it’s far from cheap.

P.S. I have a video somwhere at home of my dad playing in a quarry with his 86 90 Quattro, you have never seen anything reverse off a line so damn fast
