Nitrogen in Tyres or is it a Con ??

Hi, there is an ad in one of the localish paper.
FILL YOUR TYRES WITH NITROGEN £2.50
Ad Says : Improve comfort of ride
    Improved Saftey
    Increased fuel saving
    Improved life of Tyre

anyone explain how ?? at 1st i thought of Nitros, LOL

The main property of nitrogen which is an inert gas is that it pressure doesn't vary with temperature like that of air filled tyres. I think most motor sport use it don't they?

Some more little factoids to help you through the day
"Contrary to some claims that nitrogen will diffuse more rapidly through rubber tires than air (and oxygen), nitrogen molecules are less likely to escape from the inside of a tire compared to the traditional air mixture used. Air consists mostly of nitrogen and oxygen. Nitrogen molecules are larger than oxygen molecules and therefore, all else being equal, larger molecules diffuse through porous substances slower than smaller molecules."

"A further example of its versatility is its use as a preferred alternative to carbon dioxide to pressurize kegs of some beers, particularly thicker stouts and Scottish and English ales, due to the smaller bubbles it produces, which make the dispensed beer smoother and headier. A modern application of a pressure sensitive nitrogen capsule known commonly as a "widget" now allows nitrogen charged beers to be packaged in cans and bottles."

Sounds like tosh to me! Save your money, In general, if keep your tyres at the correct pressures using free air and you will indeed save money on fuel bills - underinflated tyres do indeed increase fuel consumption and worsen tyre wear, but it's got nothign to do with what gas is inside the tyre - you need positive pressure in the tyre.

I would run at 40 ish.

I have run 38 - 40 in my 245/40/17's for ages with no probs and the car feels great.

(Genreally speaking, the lower the profile the higher the pressure you need...)

              Cheers,

So if i get some nitrogen put in them, it might help with the profile being little.
(for when they get hot) :mischeif:

will check tyres again later as gettin plates swapped.
Just dont like to look at the geet chuck out of one of the back ones

Sorry but all gasses vary their pressure with temperature at approximately the same rate, I think it's Boils Law that dictates it? Also I think air is made from 80% Nitrogen so you could only expect a 20% effect of the very very very small effect tottally, which adds up to two parts of s0d all.

Basically the idea is a con! Save your money.

                        Extends Tyre Life
Punctureseal has been tested and proven to maintain air pressure, retard aging within the casing, reduce heat build-up and increase tyre life on an average of 25% and higher in most cases.

                        Protects Against Under Inflation
Punctureseal has the ability to eliminate porosity, air migration and seepage, thereby allowing the tyre to maintain optimum air pressure, preventing the inception of most tread separations & zipper ruptures.

                        Increases Retreadability
Punctureseal has the ability to protect against the inception of tread and ply separations caused by air migration between the plies of new and retread tyres, thereby resulting in additional retread cycles and extended casing life.

                        Retards Dry-Rot & Casing Degradation
Punctureseal has the ability to retard dry rot and aging from within the tyre, which increases the life of any tubeless tyre casing.

Heat Reduction (#1 Killer of Tyres)
Punctureseal assists in protecting tyres from devastating heat build-up which is associated with friction caused by under inflation and/or overloading. Punctureseal contains specific ingredients that aid in conductioning heat away from the tyre, by transmitting additional heat to the rim (which is the tyre's natural heat sink), resulting in a cooler running tubeless tyre for any type of equipment or vehicle, regardless of mission profile.

                        Safety Factor
Punctureseal provides safety factors that are not found in any tyre. Punctureseal will not mask or hide damage that has breached the integrity of the tyre. Punctureseal is specially formulated to allow any serious puncture (potentially dangerous) to slowly bleed air and Punctureseal out of the wound, thereby allowing the tyre to deflate in a controlled manner. This attribute provides safety and aids in alleviating the hazards associated with blowouts.

Lasts The Life Of The Tyre
Punctureseal contains Thixogelâ„¢ a proprietary process that protects the sealant against heat and provides the ability to overcome the centrifugal force of a rotating tyre. Punctureseal performance is not diminished by speed, distance or time.

Protects The Entire Inner Surface Of The Tyre
Punctureseal's Thixogelâ„¢ provides a coating that clings to the entire surface of the tyre/rim assembly. The sidewalls including every square inch of the inner air cavity, retain a 0.050 coating of the product (approximately the thickness of a quarter), thereby providing protection for the tyre at all times.

                        Positive Sealing Capabilities
Punctureseal repairs are positive and secure, thereby transforming any tyre into a self-sealing tyre. Punctureseal is capable of sealing tread area punctures caused by puncturing objects up to 1/4" in diameter, as long as the puncturing object has not severely damaged and/or weakened the tyre's structural integrity. Punctureseal can not create a secure repair in any tyre that has major internal damage, regardless of the puncturing object's diameter.

                        Water-Soluble (for easy clean up)
Punctureseal is completely water-soluble in its liquid state, and leaves no residue when rinsed with plain water. Yet it will not dissolve within a wound after it has cured. Standard repairing procedures can be utilized without additional effort.

                        Protection Against Rust & Corrosion
Punctureseal contains a complete rust and corrosion inhibiting system that not only protects steel and alloy wheels, but in a wound, Punctureseal's proprietary process will also protect steel belts. Outside contaminants are prevented from leaching back into the wound which would cause the steel belts to rust and the plys to separate. Without Punctureseal's protection, the contaminants would quickly destroy valuable casings.

                        Cannot Create A Balance Problem
Treating a tyre with the recommended amount of Punctureseal does not provide for an excessive amount of product to accumulate in the tread area, therefore the tyre is not subjected to a mass of substance that would create an imbalance. Punctureseal can not create an imbalance due to the unique ability to evenly coat the entire inner surfaces of the tyre/rim assembly (0.050 coating) subjected to normal centrifugal force. If the suspension is worn beyond specified tolerance, or a tyre/rim assembly is not balanced and/or trued, the abnormal centrifugal force generated will have enough gravitational force to pull Punctureseal off the vertical surfaces and collect in the problem area thereby increasing the "existing" imbalance problem. If the problem is severe enough the driver will feel a vibration. The vibration indicates that a problem pre-existed in the tyre assembly or suspension prior to installing Punctureseal. Punctureseal International recommends that the balance and trueness of a tyre assembly and/or the worthiness of the front suspension be verified, prior to the installation of Punctureseal.

                        Eliminates Most Flats & Blowouts
The majority of flats and blowouts are a result of driver negligence. The number one cause being excessive heat generated from under inflation. The overheated, under inflated tyre becomes soft and can be penetrated very easily. However, under inflation creates additional problems such as tread separations, ply separations and zipper ruptures. All of the above is primarily caused by porosity (natural air migration) which exists in all tyres to some degree. Punctureseal eliminates air migration and prevents the majority of damage created by under inflation, thereby preventing most related blowouts. The sealing capabilities of Punctureseal are unparalleled by any tyre sealant, worldwide.

                        Compatible With All Retread Methods
Punctureseal conditions the casing and retards aging. Plus, the ability to be thoroughly cleaned out of the tyre assures no hindrance for inspection. The product is non-hazardous, non-flammable, does not present a disposal problem and has no compatibility problems.

Well let me put it like this - the F3 tyres flex a lot more and that means they generate a lot more heat (even rock hard slicks like those are a hundred times softer than a road car tyre anyway, and the sidewalls are huge as they run 13" wheels) - and it's the temperature/pressure stability that nitrogen is supposedly used for. If you notice the difference I'd be very surprised, with a car running on soft (comparitively) road car suspension, even with the super low profile tyres.

I think 19s are pushing it a bit on bumpy country roads - you should try East Anglia with 225/40-18s, that's bad enough for me! I bet they look great though.

@Tina - try running your pressures on 36-38psi - with 19" wheels you've eliminated nearly all of the flex and suspension movement that you would normally expect from a sidewall anyway so there's not that much suspension in your suspension if you see what I mean. I run my 17s at 36psi and it's more than hard enough ride (I do have the H&R springs which are darned stiff).

A good post above about normal air we breathe is that it is actually 78% Nitrogen anway. Another good post about Boyles law which means that as the temperature of the gas goes up, so does the pressure. What gas you use is irrelevant in that respect, and I really can't see that putting an extra 12% Nitrogen in your tyres, and paying a lot of money for the privilage, will make ANY difference. Use free air and go and buy yourself a pint with the money you've saved
