Yep, read his autobiography. Comes across as a top bloke no nonsense, hard as nails but fair with it. Trained for a long time under cloughie and should have most of his good points too...

I suspect he is slightly too inexperienced at the moment. (Unfortunately)

Dont agree with that, Klinsmann, Rikjaard, Van Basten all got international jobs as their first gig.

Personally i think we have a problem in this country that we dont like players expressing them self. I have seen many kids with fantastic ability be destroyed as players because they are to scared to try what comes natural to them. How many players in the England side do u think has that ability to beat 2 or 3 players then slice the opposing defence open? Not many so then England become easy to playe against because as long as u keep your shape and let England have there possesion at the back and so they are not going to open u up. France have it with Henry and ZZ.Brazil have Ronaldihno. We need to coach players but no coach there true ability out of them. Gazza was the last player we had that we had that could do it. Now we have Rooney who i think was unlucky, but why play him on his own?

Dont agree with that (coache hat on ) i think the problems is too many kids can't marry the tricks to productivity.

It took a foreign manager to teach Joe Cole when and where to do his tricks

Look at Ronaldinho, he does lots of tricks and flicks but they are for a purpose.

England have got plenty of players that can do that but the coaches can't balance the side.

We have players like SWP, Lennon, Defoe, Gerrard, J Cole all who can beat players but not put into a balanced team where they can do damage

              Yep.

You need two or three impact players that can be allowed to attack and others that shore up what is happening at the back.

We just were not aggressive or attacking enough to win.

Sven wanted to win every game 1-0.

I would rather concede 2 goals but score 4.

Anyway, what do I know, I am squash playing engineer that has not played a competitive football game since we used jumps for goalposts in the park, isn't it, wasn't it....

You can't ignore the mental side too.
I really think the players thought they could bring the cup home this year, but there is a really fine balance between playing well and getting beat and playing not to lose.

If we had won on penalties, we would have forgot about incidents in the match, and again probably would not have cared about how good or crap we played, except for the over analytical. You just would have taken being in the Semi...........

From my experience of kids in centre of excellences and accademy sides there is to much pressure on them to do everything right where it should be express yourself and do what comes natural. I agree we need coaching to a degree but u need a blend of coaching and natural talent i.e. Brazil. With regards to the players we have got to beat players, Joe Cole a lot of step overs but in my opinion the only thing Mourihno has changed about Cole is his work rate. Lennon i agree can beat players but i think we need someone to run at the heart of these teams not just the wings. We miss a Gazza from our side. We are to easy to play against because we are to coached and drilled that is why teams can simply predict what we are going to do next because its in the coaching manual. My two pennies worth

We'll have to disagree mate , as i believe in team ethnic not individual ethic, yes you can have natural talent but it must be harness within the construct of the team.

joe cole has change you dont see him doing half his tricks he did at west ham but he is now a team player able to change a game positively not just for show.

Your way we'd end up with a team of C.Ronaldo doing flicks tricks and step overs but no end product.

When was the last time England beat Italy/France/Portugal? Scotland also have beaten all of the semi finalists, so by that rational we'd only have to turn up too!! It's this attitute that brasses off most Scots and why there is all this bad feeling every two years during a major championships.. Soooo.. England would have won it, and should have, but never, and all because of some overpaid pesky Swede eh? If the English *are* the world beaters thay say they are every two years, then perhaps they should have employed a more able coach in the first place? Perhaps an Englishman?

Give me a break eh? Or as we say up here.. gies peace

So why did scotland employ a german as coach?

Why do scottish fans keep knocking the english game and then Celtic and Rangers keep trying to come south of the border?

The nationality of the coach has f*ck all to do with things, it's just an excuse for beer guzzling morons who want to keep britian britian but then go out for a curry afterwards.

4 defeats in 6 years in competitive football is a damn good record, but we expect more and rightly so as with the players we have we should do better.

As someone said above the mentality was wrong for this world cup, instead of playing to our strengths we tried to nulify teams with a sh*tty 451, rant over

I'm afraid you've missed the point quite spectacularly. All I'm saying is that everyone south of the border buys into this "England are worldbeaters" claptrap every two years that the media bangs on about constantly, and when it inevitably goes breests up - it never seems to transpire that you were simply not good enough - end of story. Statements like these are *only* the Italians/Germany/France in the semis, and you would have beaten them, just doesn't wash. Germany's effiency and new found vigour would have been too much, as would have been the Italians superiour tactical nous, and also the French guile and individual skills..

We don't knock English football. We all appreciate good players and the standard of the Premiership.. walk into any boozer here on a Saturday and everyone will be glued to the latest game on Skysports, and appreciating the fare on show..

As for Rangers and Celtic - don't get me started.. they don't belong here nevermind the Premiership..

For the record though I was quite dissapointed you never got through - a bit like supporting British athletes in the Olympics..

@ Jamo, u know yor stuff i can tell by previous football threads on the forum. What im trying to get at is there are instances where there is to much coaching and to much pressure. I know what your saying by trying to bring the best out the team but look at in results. We have won 1 world cup so something is wrong. Obviously i would not want a load of C.Ronaldos but i think we need to find a blend of coaching and encouraging that little something different. As i say from my previous experience there is far to much pressure on our kids at youth level not all but a lot and i think this needs to be looked at.

This post has got far too technical.

What I did on my holidays by Theo Walcott.

I went to a place called Germany with my Uncle Sven and some other grown
up's. It is a country in Europe where a bad man called Adolf used to live
with his nazties, he does not live there anymore, Uncle Owen does live
there, and the grown up's say I cant talk about the bad man as it will make
Uncle Owen cry if I do. In Germany there are lots of castles and some
mountains. We are staying in a place called Baden Baden that's a silly
name, Uncle Frank has the same name as his dad, that's silly too, his mum
must get their underpants mixed up all the time.

On the aeroplane Uncle Sol sat next to me, he got me some toffee and wants
to be my friend, he works at the place where I do my YTS, so does Uncle
Freddy but him and Uncle Sol are not best friends anymore.

Uncle Owen met us at the airport, he talks foreign, Uncle Wayne, Uncle
Steven and Uncle David also talk funny, my mum says Uncle David talks like
Orville, he is a duck, Uncle Sol say's uncle David wears dresses and
knickers, and asked me if I had ever worn them. Uncle Sol got me some pop.

In Germany the grown ups are going to play football, my grandad says we
beat them in the olden days before my mum was born. That is a long time
                              ago.

While the grown up's went to play football I went shopping with Auntie
Vicky and some other girls she bought me a big ice cream and got herself a
little one but she said she was full before she had eaten any and threw it
away. She bought lots of shoes and handbags and let me play with Brooklyn.
She say's she used to be in a pop band and sang me one of her songs, I
                              think she was telling fibs.

I told Uncle Sol about my day out with Vicky and he sulked, then he bought
me an even bigger ice cream with lots of hundred's & thousands on it.

All the other grown up's have a girlfriend except Uncle Sol so he plays
with me while they go out. Uncle Sven says I must keep Uncle Sol happy,
that's why I got taken on holiday.

The grown up's went to play Football against somebody called Sweden, Uncle
Sol was crying as Uncle Freddy played for them and would not talk to him.
Uncle Sol bought me lots of toffee today and some crisps. Uncle Sven is
from Sweden and I heard him on the phone to their boss last night.
Uncle Michael hurt his knee and had to go home to his mum for a plaster.
Uncle Peter is a giant, a proper giant like you see in books, he is rubbish
                              at football though.

Uncle Wayne had a sore toe at the start of out holiday but it got better so
they let him play football. Uncle Sol got me a present but I do not like
                              it.
He says all Germans wear leather underpants and I should while we are here,
they are too tight for me.

All the grown up's started to call Uncle Wayne a potato head who stood on
somebodys spuds. He got shouted at by the referee. They are all saying that
we have to go home now. Uncle Sol was crying again and I had to sit on his
knee to make him stop. He had his mobile phone in his pocket, I think.

Being an American with a love of the Premiership....

and having played the game for 3o years gives me a unique view of the English teams weakness. They are too
clinical. too predictable with no imagination and no inspirational player. Sven is/was a a good manager as too
convincing his team or their greatness. By all accounts England should have gone all the way but as has been mentioned in 442 magazine, Sven tended too forget the little things. Like practicing penalty shots!!!!
In my estimation McLaren will be just like Sven and manage the way he did at Middleborough....bland & lifeless.
The English team needs a hard taskmaster and sombody who has participated in the Worlds finest tournament.
Fans here in the States ask when Alan Shearer will get his coaching license, then take over Englands team.
Hell the US should hire Shearer after he gets his license.
