    Teaching Learners

My other half is currently learning to drive & I'm teaching....... which is always fun!
The only accident we've had so far is being hit from behind so I'm confident my teaching skills are first rate

    But on the the Q.

When approaching Red traffic lights at say 40 in 4th gear, what is the procedure to come to a halt?
Stay in 4th until the car is close to stalling then dip clutch and coast the last bit to a halt? Doesn't sound right to me........

    cheers!

Yes - leave in the current gear and come to a stop (depressing clutch )

It is not a technique I like, but one that is currently taught to learners. I had lots of arguments with my wife when she was learning to drive.

I asked the advanced driving instructor about this and here was his reply.

"Well what do you think you should do?"

I replied that I did not feel comfortable slowing down in fourth gear to a near standstill in case I suddenly have to pull away again and I am stuck in the wrong gear.

He agreed with me, but said it is best to leave learners with the basic technique then improve their driving once they pass...

Anyway, good luck teaching her and please tell me you are not using the S2...

Bizarre. I thought that any amount of coasting was considered failure material!
Still - nevermind - we'll work on this basis.

Yes 3 coupes down now and counting. It'll have to be a slipper next time.

I was taught that 3rd-1st at a light was fine, but you should change up/down no more than 2 gears as a habit. Otherwise as mentioned you'd be coasting and in the wrong gear if the light changed (or the coast was clear and there were no camera's on it) to power away. And that wasn't all that long ago compared to most

Sounds like they're dumbing down driving lessons now as well eh? I guess it's too much to expect citizens to learn to drive properly... along with rediculous amounts o road signs, buiding fences to create poor visibility roundabouts to force ppl to slow down, camera's in the only safe overtaking spots, etc... anyway. I digress.

My driving instructor was an ex-copper and taught me to change gears while slowing down - to be in the right one to get away again and also to make use of the engine braking.

No more than two gears at a time sounds about right... 6th to 4th (or 5th to 3rd) for motorway overtaking. 4th to 2nd slowing for traffic lights. Not entirely sure that 6th to 2nd would be approved of though.

                        Ck.
Shocked, exhausted, hosed, bushed, dumped, chipped, mounted, filtered, gauged, packed, intermittantly wiped and braked. I mean broken. Now, about the car...

I too was taught to change down when approaching the lights for all of the above reasons (correct gear, costing, engine braking) for both my bike and car tests.

As for 6th to 2nd.....that was impossible as in those days, most cars had 4 gears (some with overdrive) and only the top Jap bikes had 5 gears, although my 1981 Suzuki Katana has 6.

God, how god damn old am I?

                          Cheers n years
