hee hee, as most know a racing car like that dosnt reflect on the cars in actual production. Dosnt mean every diesel audi out there is the best in the world.

what you guys think of the fact the jap cars have become more reliable? according to studies..

"what you guys think of the fact the jap cars have become more reliable? according to studies.."

As they say the more expensive a car, the more unreliable it will be. There’s a lot to be said for keeping designs simple. It’s easy to say a corolla is more reliable than a luxury German car, but on the other hand which is more complex and has the most parts?

Having had three Japanese cars and three German cars in my experience they both have there merits. At 100k miles all three jap cars were burning oil, wheel bearings, wiper motors, interior trim, and general silly parts all started to fail or fall off. All my Germans had over 110k miles on them and and they managed to stay together, didn’t burn any oil, and had no major failures.

Case and point my cq20v has over 240k miles, and our S4 has 250k miles on it, neither burn oil and drive fine, more than can be said for my 100k mile Hondas. So to answer your question maybe the Japanese cars are better from new to say 10 years old according to some survey. Come back in 10 years when they all have over 100k miles on them and it will be a very different story.

As for diesels, i've driven Ford, BMW, Opel, and Toyota's and by the far the Audi TDi was the most refined and easy to drive. Ford sounded like a transit van, Opel (vauxhall to you guys) was a gutless wonder, and the other two were very similar. Given the experience and know how from Lemans only time will tell how the VW/Audi's improve in the future. Only one i haven’t driven personally is the Honda, anybody I’ve spoken to who has were blown away by its refinement and get up and go. And that’s there first attempt!

Heheheheh, I think the fuel has a lot to do with the Le Mans success.

I understand that the stuff, if spilled, evaporated like petrol... Yes, those cars are CI (compression ignition), but they were running on something rather unlike the fuel you can buy at the filling station. Other race fuels are more like the standard marketed product you put in your road car.

Not that I want to detract from the achievement of the Audi R10 - there are some people now saying that the age of the petrol fuelled endurance racer at Le Mans is over. For now, perhaps...

I don't do Jap cars (well maybe an NSX if I was forced too!).
My dad had a Honda Accord back in the day that he bought virtually new back in '88 or '89.
Fine, until it got a few years old and then virtually everything started to fail or break!. Had no end of trouble with air-con, abs, electrics, front coil springs breaking, rack leaking etc, etc. It seemed to all suddenly come at once and it had only done around 60K miles. Sold for pocket money.

A total bag if you ask me, fitted with lots of stuff but its all built to a price, with a definate limited lifespan.

And to think he glanced over a coupe quattro before buying that bloody Honda!

Our Rover SD1 has been more reliable overall!

dont get me wrong, i dont like jap cars either, but just wanted ur opinion on the study carried out. I guess they didnt test reliability over 100k.

You guys don't know unreliable intil you drive American cars... my brand new Jeep Wrangler, which is probably the least complex car on the road, has more problems than my 20 yo BMW with a swapped engine
