To be honest how BP can try and say we have to raise the price of petrol because of the Alaskan oil field problem is beyond me. Yes ok oil prices are at an all time high but so are there record PROFITS! every year they sit there announcing billions and billions of pounds in profits and then have the cheek to charge up 1.20/litre. There should be a cap on how much they can charge surely!

It is a joke especially with all the tax we pay on petrol. I don't know exactly what the percentage is but I know its alot, probably about 40% maybe more.
It makes you wonder why we pay road tax if we get taxed so much on petrol you would think this should pay for it. Anyway for the government to make money and they will do it.1991 S2 3b, Samco Hoses, RS2 IC, 18'' RS6 Wheels, Forge Dump Valve, Scorpion Exhaust System, Decatted, MRC Remap

Well the oil prices went up as a result of the oil field closure, that's across the board - so all the oil companies have a very good excuse.
Yes, a cap on prices would be nice - but try telling that to a government that is looking at road charging schemes, and more to the point, already charges about 400% tax on the fuel we buy...

Yep i understand that, but how it makes me laugh seeing these executives on the tv saying we need to raise prices of petrol due to the unrest in the middle east and the alaskan problem then in a couple of weeks announce record profits. I dont think thats fair and maybe the consumer watchdog needs to take some action3'' Longlife Exhaust, Koni Adjustables, H&R Springs, Full RS2 Setup with Mr Nugents RS2 Chips

And don't forget that with VAT charged on fuel, everytime the petrol price rises, so does the government's cut!!
So in theory they could afford to cut the extra duty a little. Yeah right!

Lol excise on the fuel and VAT on top! I think the gov gets the lot!
Stevie, I agree - and when I said that the oil companies have a good excuse, I was using the words "good excuse" with tongue planted firmly in cheek!!!

well, i'm not gonna say what i pay cuz even tho its damn expensive here, after the conversion you'd ban me probably.
one of the 2 things i hate the most is how the price at the pump changes hourly around here (not sure if it does for you guys too) 10 cent variation everyday pretty much.
the other thing that ****** me off is how the prices will jump up within hours of a crisis but take about a month to go back to where they were...although they don't ever seem to go back to where they were anymore.....1993 UrS4...aka the rocket powered living roomComment

Tis not BP's fault but governments.
I remember all this a few years ago when shell annouced record profits.
but if you read into it more, they actually made a loss in this country, and all profits were in made from research and oils and stuff.
Im pee'd off, i spend £25 per day on fuel just to get to work, my bro just got a RS6 and is paying £70 - 80 per day to get to work. We cant exactly buy mountain bikes as we do a lot of travel, the ONLY option is to get a diesel, but that would work out just as expensive if we wanted to keep out S cars as second cars. so no win situation.ABY Coupe

Looks like the days of affordable motoring really are over doesn't it
You can be sure that if prices push up further, even if oil prices settle again after they'll always be above £1/ltr. It seems like the oil co's keep the price above a threshold once the public have accepted paying that much!
It would help alot if the government could say, cut duty, or even cut vat on the duty? I think it's pathetic that we pay VAT on the duty we pay. That's paying tax on our taxes. Here's a few rough figures:
If I earn £100, the gov gets £12 Employer's NI. I'll pay IRO £20 tax and £10 NI on that amount. So:
Gov £42
Me £70
I then put that £70 in the tank, of which the govt. gets ~£45. Sooo, if I work my backside off for a tank of fuel, the gov coffers increase by about £90. Man I feel like I've been raped.AUDI - saving Dad's from minivans since 1994

I think eventualy the fuel prices are going to turn our S cars into defunct old gas guzzlers
and no one will want one driving the price of our cars dddddddddown.
There cant be that many people who can afford to run these motors everyday

The Tesco Pay-at-Pump is limited to £60/ transaction, I had the same issue myself at the weekend. What I did was put the nozzle back, then started a new transaction at the same pump with a different card. That was when I was then able to pump another 4 quid in, but I must have spilled a good 50p's worth of that when I failed to believe the automatic cut-off...
In the UK, 60% of the pump price is fuel duty. A further 17.5% of that price is then VAT. The petrol supplier gets 20%, and the rest goes to the actual retailer. Let's not forget also that while the oil companies are making record profits on the costs of selling crude, our Governments are making record tax receipts on those corporate profits, so El-Gordo wins both ways.
Most petrol forecorts in the UK amazingly are selling at break-even at best, or are used (e.g. by supermarkets) as a loss-leader to get you in to their stores. Seems staggering when it's £1/litre, but there you go.
The crazy thing about petrol prices going up today in reaction to the oil pipe break in Alaska is not that petrol suddenly got more expensive - that petrol had already been refined and distributed, but the market reacts to a perceived worsening of supply sometime in the future. You're absoloutely right on the "prices are quick to go up but slow to go down" and also absoloutely right on "we'll never see it as low as it used to be" as we consumers have been indoctrinated to accept 90+ p/litre as acceptable.
It does concern me in the medium term that people are going to start looking at the cost of fuelling cars like ours and considering them a bad buy, which will be bad for us current owners. Better make the most of them while we can still afford to, and before the Government slaps Black-Box trackers in all our cars which automatically dish out speeding fines on satellite-tracked roads...Ex S2 owner, now running around in an A4 Avant quattro...
