    RS2 Festival Flat Battery. . .

Hello everyone at RS246. It's been a while since I last posted, lots to update you all on - not least some serious expensive issues with a flat battery....

Last weekend, the missus and I drove up to Weston Park for the V Festival. We knew it was going to be really bad weather, so packed the car accordingly. We eventually arrive on-site, loads of queing etc to find it's still chucking it down.... So, you can picture us turning around on the front seats leaning over the back trying to get our waterproofs out of the rucksacks... Then somehow putting them on before getting out of the car and into the rain, right? Wrong.... one of us (probably me the missus reckons) managed to flick the indicator stalk on whilst struggling with the macs. Not good.

Anyway, 3 days later we get back to the car at about midnight on Sunday evening, looking for a quick exit home - missus has work on Monday - only to find the battery is totally flat. The side lights had been left on for 3 days via the indicator stalk.

We try bump starting, jump leads, the works, only to find that the car will start for about half a second before cutting out. There is also a warning lamp lit on the dash which is an outline of a car with a key underneath.

We have no idea what this is - it's not even listed in the car handbook. Anyway, in the end we have no choice but to join the AA and ask for recovery all the way back to St.Albans some 120 Miles. We eventually get home at 11.30 am - sleep? It's overrated.

So, car's at home - I get the battery trickle charged (for free) from a good local garage only to find the same problem exists. The car will start, but will almost immeadiately cut out. Having searched RS246, the S2 forum and spoken to several Audi enthusiasts, it turns out that because the battery was so low, for so long, that the standard factory immobiliser has 'lost' the code from the tiny chip in the car key. The car doesn't recognise the key anymore...

Therefore, I can see no other option right now but a visit to an Audi main stealer to get this sorted. Has anyone any ideas if this can be fixed DIY at home?

In any case, I hope our experience serves as a reminder to be really careful not to flatten your battery as the RS2 will not easily bump/jump start all because of the factory immobiliser!!

Unfortunately since the introduction of the GEKO security codes system there is no way to get the appropriate codes to reprogram your keys.

The only option is the take it to a main stealer to have them recoded.

The other option you could try is to get a new immo control unit from a main dealer as they have the security code on a sticker on top of them. Even then you would need VAG-COM to reprogram it. I tried this on my TDi though and my VAG-COM wouldn't log into it properly.

        hi

This happened to my RS2 in France last year - managed to get it going by doing the flwg:

put the key in the ignition and turn it to position 2, then disconnect/reconnect the battery and bingo - then lights goes of and the car starts!!http://www.s2forum.com/forum/images/...s/rotflmao.gif

I also had a problem with water getting into one of the two electrical connections (covered with a rubber protector) situated in the engine bay on the bulkhead in the middle.

          Hi DavidP20V,

Yeah, the festival rocked - a little rain to damp out any dust but otherwise excellent!!

We saw, Faithless - who turned the whole place upside down on Sat night - followed by Groove Armada. I thought their set was a little too hardcore/re-mixed for a festival but good nevertheless.

Sunday, was good - less rain and Beck really blew us away. I've never listened to any of their tunes before and to see them live with such a creative performance - puppets etc was excellent. To finish of the evening we saw FatBoy who never disapoints. His remixing with The Gorrillaz top 2 tracks was a perfect end.

Then the car trouble - ouch....

Hi Chap. I wonder could you tell me how it went. My 96 S2 is even worse. I get the immobiliser light and half the other lights lighting up permanently when the ignitions off and the keys in my pocket!! Also had to pull the immobiliser fuse 19 out to start it and now can remove the ignition key and the engine keeps running!!
All because the battery went flat whilst it was being stored. I think it has a bad earth and its lost the immobilisor code.
              Any help would be appreciated.

              Jonathan
