    Switchblade key for early cars

Don't know if anyone else has done this before, not seen any threads on it either...
I modified one of my original key blades to fit a more modern switchblade style key body. Also fitted a recent model Cobra alarm which allows the remote system of it to work too (apart from the seperate boot opener)
So the result? Modern switchblade key, with working remote for my 91 3B
    I am very happy.....

Very tidy! Beats getting stabbed in the leg if you sit down with the key in your pocket!

How was the key attached? Is it welded/soldered on at the base where the original key blank was fitted to the housing?

It is fitted like the original, there is a groove in the key blade, and a pin is fitted through the body and keeps the blade attatched.... Just like the original, therefore it is still removeable.

I figured others had done it, but its nice to refresh peoples minds that there are things which can be done.
I didnt know the Cobra alarms 3 years ago could be programmed to take the Audi remote signal.... Excellent, I know it will still work ok in 3 years time then...!
          Thanks guys

Can you not get the blank key already in the fob cut, would this not save you attaching the old key? is there a How-To guide anywhere as i have one of these key fobs with a blank key..

I suspect not, as the profile is probably different.... I am not sure.
I did it, as I didnt want to pay for another blade, and I didnt have an uncut blank for the switchblade...(which are normally lasercut things)

Spot on.BTDT. The blank key that comes with it is too thick compared to the old style key. I have got as far as having fitted the old style key into the housing.

I still need to sort a remote alarm with a transponder that fits. I know the a certain Meta one that fits but they are pretty hard to track down. Other than that I have not found anything else that will fit in the casing. There is a new Toad compact alarm that has a small banana shaped remote, but I have not seen one close up yet...

I am thinking the Meta is defo' the way to go......

@ LHD kid - what model Cobra do you have?

Does anyone know where to get the switchblade fobs from? Are these dealer only items? How about a part number please?

no, the buttons dont do anything. the space inside is very small. it would need a pro electrician to rewire the GT remote into this...
