If you were offered the choice between an A4 with a chipped 1.8T, or a 3.0V6 which would you go for? What's realistic from re-mapping the 1.8T in terms of power without major mechanical work?
Ex S2 owner, now running around in an A4 Avant quattro...
1.8T. Not that I'm biased.
I'm sure 195 bhp is possible from the A4. Maybe more than 200 if you don't mind running it on good fuel. Shame the A4 only came with the K03 turbo. It's good for low down torque and minimal lag though.
There is no replacement for displacement so the old theory goes, dont know though some of these aussie V8's with the ozzie dream engine "the chevy big block" are not as quick as i thought. A mate has a 472 cubic inch big block (7.7 Litre) its not miles per gallon, its gallons per mile

K03 can be chucked... My A4 is getting this soon: GT28RS
I've gone from VR6 to 1.8T - miss the addictive sound, but tuning is in a different league, and there's less weight up front.

I believe the maximum on stock internals is generally agreed to be around 350bhp, as long as torque is kept in check (that's what kills the rods).
Please don't take my word on that though - have a look around the various Audi forums - I spend a fair bit of time on Audi-sport.net, seems pretty good (obviously nowhere near as good as here though!)

Seriously though. Have you tried maintaining a V6?
Alright alright so my V6 is lacking in well everything at the mo and suffering serious power loss (it comes and goes think its a ecu thing)
but remember the old RS cosworth (excuse my language) V6 2.8 supercharged 4x4 siera hitting 450hp standard "Yeah V6 baby!":mischeif:
yes whacking a phat assd turbo or supercharger is always needed i admit.
but smoothness only comes with cc's and cyclinders, and a turbo is only as good as the block its bolted 2.
