If it's the drive electronics that have failed then it may be still possible to pull off your data.

Laptop drives get hot and the most common failure mode is the drive electronics - the motors / heqads etc are robust.

Check the make and model number of the drive - this will be on the label fixed to the top. You will then need to get a working drive of exactly the same type e-bay & computer fairs are good sources.

Swap the board on the bottom over. Most are fitted with very small torx fixings.

This will only work if it's the board that has failed. Hvae done it a couple of times myself to help out friends.

I got another battery for it not long ago........
remove the power lead i will now, a never thought of that.

Its now fixed, (michael gone to collect it whooo) but hard drive was mashed, so lost everything. So can put this pentium blonk 16bit colour thing away later.

Think im gonna see how much it will sell for & get another tower,
and put it on a trolly with wheels so its mobile, LOL

ps, i thought dell was decent ??

i dunno what i would do if I lost my data. I still got my college assignments on here and pretty much my whole life album!

thats why every 6 months I backup to tape and give it to a family member to hold should my house ever burn down. (in between the months i backup new stuff to dvd).

Only time most people realise what the've lost is once its gone, amazing how many company's out there dont have a backup in place. 1 Hard disk crash and business is bankrupt.

From now on i will copy stuff to disc.

I have also been informed that keeping the battery in all the time
whilst plugged in, was possibly how i've melted network cards as the slot
is next to the battery ???
