    Standard S2s are slow!!

That's NOT my opinion! I am a big fan of these cars and have always rated them highly however, being involved in the golf scene and with the increase in popularity of the 20v conversion the golf boys don't rate the S2.

The good news is I went to the Rallye meet yesterday and was at the head of the convoy (because we had the Satnav) of 4 cars, a revo'd mk4, a rallye with a 20v conversion and a well sorted G60 syncro and my Avant. We were cruising up the M1 at 85 and the lads fancied a bit of sport, I just squeezed the throttle in 6th and blew them away!! That shut em up!

Why do you think i sold my 20v MK2?? It was quick but as said, when it rained, forget it. Wheelspin on the motorway on a change down from 5th to 4th , you need 4WD.

Oh and the build quality, ride, overall feel of the S2 is much better.

          Cheers,

Although, having driven a mk.2 8v GTi and S2 back to back for a year (as many on tthis forum still do) the Golf might feel a bit tinny and lack any form of fundamental grip (on 14s anyway) but my Golf is still the most fun car I've driven and it was knackered. Made the very calm, efficient, effortless S2 seem like the luxo-autobahn cruiser that it is. Sold the Golf though and turned it into Porsche brakes... Still miss old heap of oil-burning rust though.

That said, the chassis did struggle with the supposed 115bhp and it did try to swap ends if the wind changed direction. Braking was even worse, especially when I set the front on fire in Wales on a thrash! 1.8t conversion must just be scary as hell!
