    Looking at a S2 tomorrow.....advice needed

I am going to look at a 1991 S2 with my brother tomorrow. It's currently listed on Ebay and has had the same owner for the last 12 years. Amazingly the car has done 170k and is still on its original clutch. It has however had an engine rebuild done 45k miles ago.

The current owner has listed the following as the only issues:-

cable broken on front seat to enable it to fold forward
    bolster starting to collapse
    creaky tailgate
stone chips to front of car.

The car has a Dialynx remap, decat and full stainless. Apparently approx 270bhp.

I have read through the buyers guide on S2central but just wondered what peoples top tips would be when looking at a S2? Any advice much appreciated.

I'd factor in a new clutch - it maybe fine but its going to need to be done soon - mine finally gave up at 143K miles mainly due to a weeping rear crank oil seal.

Check for work done on the suspension or expect to have to replace the majority of the rubber (wishbone bushes, ARB bushes, subframe bushes) plus drop links (tend to squeak/creak), top mounts, diff, gearbox mounts etc. Check for wear on tyres and for history of 4 wheel alignment.

Sounds like he has given it a reasonably honest appraisal if he has listed some items needing attention already but have a good poke about and read up on here about common niggles in addition to the above. I'd also give the steering a good once over as racks are a PITA to replace so check for noise, and smoothness lock to lock and signs of fluid loss etc.

Cables are not a nightmare to sort on the seats or u can find them on ebay or audi breakers, all S2's have a creaky boot but some grease in specific locations can help as can adjusting the guides/slam plates and reckon about £45 to replace the seat foam.

    Good luck!

Bear in mind a specialist will need to fit the clutch and you could spend up to a grand to do it properly. (Slave cylinder while you are in there)

wasn't a stealer but a well know Audi Specialist. My local garage wouldn't touch the 6 speed Audi as he had not done it before. (Which I thought was honest and fair of him).

Its 8 - 9 hours labour to do the clutch anywhere....

          cheers,
