Seems a shame to put decent engine in such a package... I really liked the TT when it was launched, but I soon got tired of its somewhat bland appearance... That and I don't really go for the Haldex thing.

Nice to see the turbocharged 5 coming back to Audi production - assuming these stories are true !

As good as it would be to have a new five, it seems unlikely given Audi's future platform strategy - engine behind front axle - an inline five does not make sense with this line up. Also, why would anyone twin turbo an inline five? Makes more sense on an inline six (see BMW). The likely engine for the possible TT RS wil be a twin turbo version of the current V6 used in the R32 and TT V6.

I read about these roumors in German forums also. if they go for two turbos hen it will be sequential. They say that this I5 is derived from the Lambo V10. We will see.

Maybe they could trans mount it like in the old 5 cyl passats

The article says that it would have twin sequential turbochargers, which makes perfect sense for any inline engine.

It also says permanent 4WD which might suggest they are finally ditching the Haldex system

Balls, don't believe it for one second. I've said this to the guys on fans. If they produce this then I'll run naked through a field of nettles.
TT RS ? nothing official from Audi on this (same as the long rumoured RS3 and RS8, net is full of bull on these too) but there will be a new TT Sport of which there was one in the old model.
I say it'll have a tuned 3.6 V6 and as much as we hate it, no turbos.
Audi don't seem to like turbos at the minute.

5 cyl Passats were never transversely mounted. Audi has always described the TT quattro as permanent 4wd despite it being Haldex. It would be unlikely that Audi would completely re-engineer the chassis to accept Torsen differentials.

Sequential turbocharging works poorly compared to conventional twin turbos. Audi would be unwise to go this route. The extra weight and complexity would be a waste of time.

Although it would be great to have another I5T, I think it is all online bolox.

I went to the new launch of the new TT at my local dealership where I met a top audi exsecutive, and asked him if audi would ever bring back the i5, his answer was that they cannot because audi had sold it to volvo ,now part of ford who now have it in the focus .

Interesting you say that. I am no expert, but at the recent RR day, the owner showed us his modified Supra (I think Supra, well a straight 6 Jap cr@p anyway). He was running sequential turbos, which he said was not too bad to tune...it was all in the maths of choosing which units and when they came in.

That said, he was only pushing a lowly 720BHP from that setup and so was relying on 150BHP nitrous kit to reach his full compliment of 870 horses

I'll say that again shall I.....720BHP from only 1 cylinder more than us and sequential turbos

                        Cheers n

BMW have just launched a 3-series coupe (I think ti's called the 330Ti?) which is a straight 6 with sequential turbos. Apparently it's a fantastic car and puts the N/A M3 to shame as it has so much more lower-end torque than the M3. I find it interesting that at the same time that Audi seem to be changing their entire sporty engine concepts over to high-revving N/A engines (e.g. RS4, new S6 and S8...), BMW are going the other way (also e.g. the new Mini Cooper S now has a turbo rather than a supercharger.). Go figure.

@Dan - you are not alone in this automotive sea of confusion... Audi made its reputation on turbocharged engines (and quattro of course) then they seem to have dropped it in recent years on the flagship motors - almost as if the marketing department has forced them to compete more directly with BMW on N/A engines. What next from Audi - rear wheel drive ? LOL

BMW are well known for strong TD engines but they haven't had a turbo petrol motor since that 2002Ti thing in the 70's have they ? It was a great looking retro thing now but it had hellish lag and on-off characteristics... Turbo technology was a bit wobbly back then. Look at us ~30 years on with our collection of interweb experts and desk jockeys who know more about this then BMW did way back then.

OMG - maybe we've been hosting some BMW insiders at the forum all these years and we have educated them on the joys of turbo engines and swayed them into such a design brief at BMW - gasp !

Question - why would you want a big torque monster with just rear-wheel drive - apart from all the Clarkson wannabees doing donuts at will ?
