Your local VRO office will tell you.

I recently put a plate onto retention mate....and I can tell you the car has to be fully road legal in order to transfer or retain the plate
They wanted proof of the cars current MOT, tax disk and everything else they could add in there
Plus I had to pay £125 iirc retention fee.

Vehicles must be available for inspection.
The inspection helps to verify entitlement to the registration number being transferred / retained. Both the donor (the vehicle giving up the number) and the recipient (the vehicle receiving the number) may be called for inspection.
Vehicles must be subject to MOT / HGV test.

Non-testable vehicles such as agricultural tractors and milk floats, for example, are outside the scope of the schemes. Only testable vehicles can participate in transfers and retentions and valid test certificates must be sent with applications.

Vehicles must be currently licensed, or in the process of being licensed. The application will still be considered, however, where the last license (tax disc) expired within six months of the date of application. If the license has been voluntarily surrendered for refund, the six-month concession does not normally apply.
That said it should be easy enough to get the car through the MOT and buy 6 mths tax and then just cash the tax disk back in once the plate is off it .

Definately a Nice Bargain for that money....

      Must of changed then.
My plate came off an old banger that defo didn't have an MOT, in fact it had no suspension or wheels on it But then, that was a "good few" years ago.
I've only ever transfered to new motors for at least the last 15 years

I'll love the poor fool who buys mine

Regtransfers had it on the site for POA.
A swift email, slightly theatening further action, and it's been removed.

They change the law in Dec 2005, if the car has been SORN no longer than 12 months you can transfer the plate ( as long as there is no break in expiry date of the licence and the commencement of the SORN )

I put Grahams plate on rentention the fee is £105.
