      Paul,

I had the cambelt changed on my 2.5TDI transporter by MSL Audi in Dublin for about 800 Euro (as far as I remember). There were 2 belts that needed changing, one to drive the cam and water pump and one to drive the diesel pump. They also changed the water pump.

They did a really BAD job. They left a PAS pump bolt loose so fluid leaked everywhere, did not fit the cam belt cover properly and left various nuts and bolts lying in the engine bay. They did wash the van though - as if that would impress me... complete monkeys.

The only reason I didn't do it myself was I didn't know how to do the timing. Apparently that can be done in VAGCOM though. That's the only time I've used vw/Audi service and was really disappointed.

Paul, no help but gives a bit of perspective....

Taken from www.topgear.com on their used review of the allroad.

The Allroad's complexity means it absolutely must come with a fully stamped-up service history from an Audi dealership, but beware - servicing and parts are among the most expensive you'll find anywhere.

While a complex machine, it is extremely durable, although the 2.5 TDi diesel needs assiduous maintenance. The bodywork needs to be perfect, because panels are extremely expensive to repair.

checking on Fontain Audi (independent) menu pricing for an Audi avant A6 2.5tdi which is the same lump, the timing belt change is £632

whichever way you look at it, its going to smoke a card somewhere in that wallet, just a good job its a great car!

The cam belt is a fair job on either the 2.5 TDI or the 2.7 Bi turbo, the newer V8 models have chains, dealers prices differ. Make sure the water pump is changed as well as all pulleys, belts and tensioners are changed. You need a bar/tool to time the cams up correctly. On the TDIs the pump timing is important and best set on vag com or simmilar.
Done loads takes about 5/8 hours to do properly its easier to remove the front lock carrier etc rather than use the service pins. The parts can cost iro £350

I am not a great fan of service books full of stamps, but the numpties love them as a way to sell your car at a higher price than without them.

I know its a complex job as I have sized it up from the manuals - I just cant face the 5-6 hr toil and the hassle of special tools just to save a couple of hundred quid. But what really gauls me is paying Audi top whack for their £70 an hour rate or whatever and the very real potential of some apprentice/scrote doing the work with (if I'm lucky) some casual observance from an experienced/trained time served technician.

The £350-370 for what amounts to fluid & filter changes, plus ten minutes diickking about with a laptop really gets my goat.

Resigned now to the fact that this premium car has scarey service costs... I could lose lots more money down the line without an Audi stamp for the timing belt work. Arrrrrrrsssssseeeee !

It all depends on how long you intend to keep the car Paul. Obviously if you intend to run it into the ground, then the Audi stamps will be worth ****. But I'm afraid you're right overwise, there are a lot of numpties that belive that if the car has done more than 100k, and hasn't got all its stamps, it's fit for the scrapheap.

I have done loads of these, 5-6 hours if you've done one before!
They are proper painfull job, so many covers, and bits to remove before you get in there.
This will make you feel better, i have just changed an alternator on the same beast, bumper off, drain water, front panel into service position (on the floor, to the right)vishious fan off(chuff me they get tight) all engine front covers off, then there's the alternator!
                4 hours later,,,, done.
I would never buy a V6 Audi, just too tightly packaged! every customer mones a bucket full at the srvice costs.
And they leak oil like the Exxon valdez!

Got my hoses, many thanks Paul.

Wise words there I think... I deffo begrudge this but needs must. Do you know where those oil leaks come from on the V6 TDI ?

Back to the timing belt job - suppose I should get the thermostat and water pump replaced at the same time ? They already included tensioners for the timing belt.

Suspect I'll be selling an unused 8E0 rear brake conversion to help pay for this fiasco.

                    Cheers,

                    Paul

                      2.5 tdi oil leaks

                      hi all
oil leaks normally come from passenger side rocker cover gasket(leakest link........drivers also leaks at time)

crankcase breather on oil filter housing blocks ---- causes biult up of crankcase pressure---- causing leaks at rocker covers and other weak sealing spots................can get breather seperate or replace complete oil filter housing........when doing rocker cover gaskets check that injecter seals on rocker cover are nt leaking..............best to replace rocker covers and gaskets

simple job to do oil filter housing...............about v 3-4 hours max with rocker covers

                      remove fuel lines to injecters
                      remove turbo
                      remove egr valve pipework
and water houses depending hw new you engine is..........different updates

                      no specail tools need............:mischeif:

i agree to replace water pump when other cambelts and rollers are replaced

also check the polly belt(powersteering belt) damper..............held on with 8 mm bolts..............nylon bush wears on high mileage use.................nisy and causes belt to bounce at high engine speeds

my two and a half pence worth

                      hope this helps

                      cheers

OK - well here's an update on the pi$$take from my local dealer... They have already quoted ~1000 for the timing belt work and 80k service on the Allroad. With knowledge of the parts prices to be 40 quid list for a water pump (exchange) and thermostat - I ring again to ask how mush extra labour to change them during the timing belt work... The response floored me -

An hour and half said the wee scrote on the phone... At £93 an hour if you don't mind. Belfast has got so far up its own ***** recently - there's the feckin peace dividend for you !

When I explained that I'd been working on Audis for ~15 years and had looked closely at how little additional effort was required for this I told him to re-evaluate... So little boy tells me he'll speak the workshop manager... He comes back and tells me 1.5hrs is correct... I continue to dispute it and ask to speak to him... Few minutes holding then I'm told that the workshop manager isn't allowed to speak to customers. I tell him that my wife could change thos parts in 20 minutes with every else stripped out of the way - phuck sake (sorry for language - I'm venting).

Well phuck you Isaac Agnew and your scrotey service department who have no idea about personal services or basic vehicle maintenance. You were going to get a grand off me as new customer, then you immediately tried to rip me for another 160 so you can shove it. Sure I could afford that - but its the principle that hacks me off.

At list price, ALL of the parts for the timing, service & other bits comes to £300 (ex VAT) - so even if I have to spend £200 on tools (getting most back on eBay afterwards) I can do this for hmmmm about a grand cheaper than going to Agnews. Screw you guys !

Sure it will take me and the brother in law (time service technican for Scania and others) at least 8 hours to get through, but with all the extra care that I personally know will go into the job and photos along the way for documentation then I'm gonna be much happier with the result.

I plan to keep the AR for at least another 5 years so any reduction in perceived value cos it doesn't have dealer stamps doesn't concern me a jot... If some d1ck doesn't wanna buy the car cos of that, then he doesn't deserve it. I shall find a better future home for the car from a PROPER Audi enthusiast on here or similar.

The dealers are a shower of tossers sometimes - I shall be writing to Agnews and Audi UK to share my utter disgust with the situation.

None of my Audi's will ever be serviced by the dealer network if they continue to operate like this. The can all ****** off - happy Xmas Audi UK - go find some other mug.

You don't need any special tools!
Just mark the position of all the pulleys with paint pen, having found a position thats not on the point of max valve lift, ie dosen't want to turn shafts as soon as you detension the belt.
Fit new bits check marks and your done! locking it all up in timing position is only required if your not carefull methodical (most srvice technitions) oh don't go for a cup of tea half way through the belt/roller change.

You will need two 32mm spanners to remove vishous fan coupling...

                                Don't rush it,
